One Of The Greatest Songs Of The 80's'

Beneath the old iron bridges, across the Victorian parks
And all the frightened people running home before dark
Past the Saturday morning cinema that lies crumbling to the ground
And the piss stinking shopping center in the new side of town
I've come to smell the seasons change and watch the city
As the sun goes down again

Here comes another winter of long shadows and high hopes
Here comes another winter waitin' for utopia
Waitin' for hell to freeze over

This is the land where nothing changes
The land of red buses and blue blooded babies
This is the place, where pensioners are raped
And the hearts are being cut from the welfare state
Let the poor drink the milk while the rich eat the honey
Let the bums count their blessings while they count the money

So many people can't express what's on their minds
Nobody knows them and nobody ever will
Until their backs are broken and their dreams are stolen
And they can't get what they want then they're gonna get angry

Well it ain't written in the papers, but it's written on the walls
The way this country is divided to fall
So the cranes are moving on the skyline
Trying to knock down this town

But the stains on the heartland, can never be removed
From this country that's sick, sad, and confused

Here comes another winter of long shadows and high hopes
Here comes another winter waitin' for utopia
Waitin' for hell to freeze over

The ammunition's being passed and the lords been praised
But the wars on the televisions will never be explained
All the bankers gettin' sweaty beneath their white collars
As the pound in our pocket turns into a dollar

This is the 51st state of the U.S.A.
This is the 51st state of the U.S.A.
This is the 51st state of the U.S.A.

Brilliant song too.

still relevant all these years later... in my top 10 albums ever

Here’s an 80s track that wasn’t recorded in the 80s but sounds like it should have been because the artist is an 80s obsessive. The ‘official video’ is more interesting but a tad too distractingly boy-meets-boy in gay club so I won’t lumber you with it.

Think you need to read the thread title again

Think you need to read the thread title again

Think you need to read the text in my message again. It’s a thread about great songs in the 80s. The one I posted, as I say, is a recording that’s been produced in very much an 80s style but wasn’t released then and us fairly recent. I think it’s a great 89s style song. I thought this thread would be an interesting place to put it as message boards like this one do tend to be discursive and digressive in nature and take unexpected turns. For example; I had no idea there’d be a need to explain this.

Have a nice day 😀😘😉

I struggle to think of a bad song on the first three albums

Yeah . There Goes My Gun & I’m Amazed poss bottom of my list, but still good . Loved Bossanova and Trompe le Monde has grown on me over the years .
Got all the new albums and I think they are underrated as constantly compared to Doolittle . For me they are growers with 4 or 5 great tracks per album . Seeing them in Birmingham & London this March

I reckon you might've been overthinking this somewhat.

I reckon this was their best...

Best human league song like.

80’s thread Marra.

Love Wah, The story of the blues, often stick in on after a night out and sing along at the top of my voice (poor neighbours). There are too many great songs of the 80's my list would run to hundreds and I still couldn't pick a fave.
