oldest pub in sunderland

Clarendon has reopened as the Clarendon aye, although I've seen a few people who used to get down there regular alluding to it not being permanent on the old social media there.

As for the oldest, is it not the Boar's Head? Sure the Echo said that when there was an article about it being done up recently.

Edit: It is the Clarendon, Boar's Head the second oldest - Sunderland’s second-oldest pub to reopen after years of neglect
Sunderland’s oldest pub is thought to be nearby former Clarendon, now The Butcher’s Arms, dating back to 1753 in licence records and possibly back to 1724 when there was a building on the site. The Boar’s Head, which also operated as The Boar’s Head Hotel, opened soon after.

Shipwrights has been there for about 350 years, albeit wasn’t actually regarded as being in sunderland until fairly recently. Address used to include north hylton, near sunderland.

The Clara was generally known to be oldest pub in Sunderland. Spent many a day in there when it was the River View before it returned to being called the Clarendon.

Some big f***ing rats in there back in the day, and I'm not talking about the clientele before anyone pipes up!
