Old IWC watch

I came over this yesterday - anyone knows how old or what value it might have? It's in very fine condition, but the strap is new (and cheap/ugly). Have held time almost to the second over the last 30 hours.

Do you have a model number? They are on eBay from £30 to £7,500 and there’s an original strap on for nearly 300 quid alone. I can’t see that exact one unfortunately.

It’ll be worth thousands no doubt

That would be nice.

Can’t remember ever discussing my financial situation on here apart from the post on the .com domain last week :)

Tried looking around a bit myself but couldn’t find it either. Was hoping SMB might be an oracle on this subject as on many other:)

Looks like a vintage 1940s Cal83

Looking on eBay it looks like the 14k gold Cal83 models consistently go for between £1000 and £1200 so work back from there...yours looks stainless steel, doesn’t have the original strap and on close inspection the dial looks a bit hit and miss (seems faded and grubby in place which is understandable for a watch of that age but there are also some red marks in places). The crown also looks chunkier than on most IWC watches so that may not be original.

The filigree dial/face is unusual so that might make a difference.

If it was me I would spend some coin on a proper strap, have it professionally cleaned and wear it.

If you want rid how much would you take for it?

This is my plan too

I suspected this as the fit isn't perfect either - you're probably right. It is stainless, btw.

Thank you for your input, marra!

What did you pay for it?

Then you have the value.

Thanks. The most important thing for me to find out was what type/age/other information I could about it as I've never seen one before and couldn't find one like it on the internet (probably due to my lack of searching/watch skills and knowledge).

Everything has a price. What do you want for it?

Happy to keep it for now - will let you know if I get bored with it. Not sure how much I will wear it as it is quite a bit bigger than the other watches I wear (I think something like 47/48 mm) and thick too. But it's different and I kind of like that it shows it's age (even though I don't really know how old it is :) )

It’s almost priceless to you if you like it.

They call them the poor man’s Patek Philippe and they have a great WWII Heritage. Your watch could have a hell of a story behind it.

I’m into Longines myself but IWC is in the same bracket of elegant Swiss watchmakers.

Enjoy marra

Incidentally, what did you pay for it so we know how well you did?

Thank you for all your helpful information, marra. I'm not sure how I'm going about finding out more, but the watchmaker might know more after having a look at it.

I paid 350 quid for it at a antique-market. The seller had very little knowledge about it and claimed to have bought it in France many years ago. He had a few Omega's at fair prices (one a rebuild pocket watch), but claimed to have been collecting Oris watches - he had about 25 of them. All watches seemed to have had a quick clean-up and a new strap. As the IWC has a see-through back it wasn't too hard to have a look at the condition, but as you suggested I'll let someone specialising in vintage watches have a look and find a suitable strap.

Welcome to the cool kid club
Thanks, marra.

Berry’s in Newcastle are an IWC stockist, while they might not be able to give you any help, they might be able to give you a contact of someone who can

I've added a few pictures. Cue: comments on my extremely ugly wrist :)

A better picture of the back - didn't make it in time to edit the previous post

I'm nee expert but the engraved dial is interesting, the vast majority of these are plain. Needs a professional cleanup.
