AFAIK it's not 6 months from when the new ones come out. They will announce a date at some point with 6 month deadline.Don't need to do it straight away. Normally have a 6 months or so before old notes are withdrawn.

And even after that you can take them to a bank I think, or to the BoE itself any time thereafter.Tbf the 6 months was just a guesstimate of sorts. The point was that they don't just withdraw them from immediate effect, they do give you enough time to change/spend them.
