That's not the issue-the issue is why you class the aforementioned clubs in the top 8 ahead of us given their attendances and honours are historically fewer than ours.

The answer, I suspect is, because there is no methodology to it beyond blind Mag obsession and ill-will.

If you answer this with another question, then I'm taking that as an "I can't answer the question".

ok ill try to answer you question as honest as I can.

"BIGNESS" is i think defined by success, revenue, tradition, world status, capacity/attendances.

Some clubs have all of these ie man u, liverpool, Arsenal.

Then you have chelsea and man city who are now in the modern game huge due to there financial backing this has resulted in success, albeit more for Chelsea as of now.

Spurs and villa whilst not getting the huge crowds of other clubs or generating big turnovers have had remarkable success including european cups, leagues and fa cups. This still places them in the big club brackett.

Newcastle, attract the 3rd biggest crowds in the country in the 3rd largest stadium and generate a massive turnover. We have played in the champions league, uefa cup, fa cup finals and premiership runers up, thus cemmenting a global image.

all of these clubs also a strong tradition.

Sunderland whilst a big club dont quite match these 8. This isnt an insult against sunderland its just the way I see it. I agree that the 6 league titles is more than most and whilst im not discreditting them they did all take place in the 1800's. Sunderland do have a strong big history but its more inline with Blackpool, stokes and Prestons.

Only being honest

No they didn't.

to be honest I think your still looking at this through re n white glasses.

I very rightly class us as amongst the 8 biggest clubs in england.man u, arse, lpool, chelsea, city, spurs, villa, us, I dont think thats being controversial or biased by suggesting that. In terms of success your right we are making the numbers up. Only 3 clubs contest this anyway. And when we got relegated of course people cheered, we were a big scalp and when we went down. David and Goliath and all that. For every one who cheered when we went down there was equal ammount cheering when we came straight back up.

But you leave Everton out of your 8 ....what a ****

therse no way a provinsial yo yo club like yous are bigger than tottenham. Tottenham who have just played in the champions league and just qualified again for europe.

Yet we are the delusional ones :-D

There's no way that you lot a club just promoted from the Championship, are bigger than Everton. ;)

For Mad Cyril in order

Liverpool
Arsenal
Everton
Villa
Spurs
Chelsea

Global image? Fat twats in benidorm living in their barcode shirts for two weeks hardly constitutes a global image.

You have gone to the effort to draft a lengthy reply, so I won't knock you for that.

I stay clear of the whole "Big clubs" thing as it's just a conceit for clubs who aren't big too classify themselves as being bigger than others on grounds removed from football and thus classify their comparative failure as being somehow a better type of failure to other clubs who also haven't won anything.

Find it a bit embarassing on the whole, that includes when Sunderland fans do it too.

Given the amount of Money Newcastle wasted on trying to win stuff though I find it particularly cringeworthy/enjoyable when their fans run to the big club thing. In 1996 Newcastle were all about the football, the goals, the players on the pitch, the games they played.

Now they're about how many people come and watch, and how many shirts are sold. Says it all really.

your correct people in strips in benidorm doesnt constitute a global image.

But large direct links with the states, Australia and asia certainly does as does playing regular recent european footbal

Regular European football? I'm confused now, I thought we were talking about the mags.

.

This is testament to the fans, who know that the heady days have long gone and we are light years from there. However the fact that more people watch us now than then is something to be proud of. Sunderland are similar to get 40k average when shite for decades is a marvellous achievement.

You claim that newcastle cling to these days in the 90's which i supopse is true but no different to sunderland fans who cling to the big club tag because of league titles won 2 centuries ago despite playing in the 3rd tier and mostly in the 2nd.

1993-2002

is regular and recent european football surely.

Edit: pressed post twice doh!

I've been married, moved house, changed jobs 3 times and had 3 kids since 2002.

Did you know that we won the FA Cup as recently as 1973
