In this case the system isnt fucked. Both were charged with murder but blamed each other, yet 12 members of the public decided there was not sufficient evidence to find them guilty of it

I think that will be the biggest element of it. Especially since the one convicted of manslaughter was the one whose fingerprint was found by a forensic archaeologist and the other denied it and presumably no forensic evidence to pin it on him
