Nostalgia post: How football has changed

I started going/watching and playing in the 90’s where flair players were revered because they looked better than everyone else. Zola, Cantona, Juninho, Kinkladze.

We’re now second tier and all of them are flair players. Clarke, Roberts, Pritchard, Diallo even Neil.

I miss tackles tbh

Remember standing under that scoreboard for my first couple of seasons at RP, always wondering whether one of those tin sheet numbers would accidentally come flying down and have someone’s arm off, or worse. Also Ar hur (peanuts as big as coconuts) the peanut seller with the t missing off his brown coat. Those were the days, but even as an old fart, I know nostalgia has to be balanced against the better elements of progress.

Looking at your program to see who was A, B, C & D etc and watching the bloke climb the ladder to put up the half time scores then singing The Mags Are Getting Beat. 😎

I occasionally mention to my two lads about the good old days of football and how much it has changed since I started going in the 60s. Yeah I know I'm a boring Dad...

A few examples.
No subs
No yellows or reds
Back passes to the goalie allowed
Managers lasting more than a few weeks.
Proper physical tackles allowed.
No/less play acting.
Standing on the terraces.
Crowd swells and being swept along by the crowd movement.
Tanner a bag peanuts.
No corporate boxes/ prawn sandwich brigade
No shirt names or squad numbers.
Hardly any overseas players

Etcetera.

What are things you remember that have changed and what are the things you miss??

Floodlight pylons
teams running out on to pitch , none of this lining up shite.
nee music after a goal
nee announcement who scored
nee mention of how much injury time
offiicals having fancy haircuts and not having kites

They didn’t even read out the teams

I loved it back then for what it was though, when the old crumbling grounds with history were still in use
The game seemed to have more characters. Most had someone that riled the crowd.

My uncle picking me up in his battered old car to take me to the game, always picked me up, then his brother, driving over the bridge and the radio going off, me wide eyed at the crowds walking down.

My uncle would sit me on the crash barrier right behind the goal in the fulwell end so I could watch the players warm up while he went for a pint and whatever, often not seeing him again till half or full time, but it didn't matter as the bloke around me kept me safe.

Watching the Roker end bouncing up and down was hypnotic and wanting to stand in there when I grew up.

Cheering, singing, believing we were the best football team in the world, no matter what the result and Chris Turner was the greatest goalkeeper ever. Thinking Dave Swindlehurst's name was actually "f***ing Swindlehurst"

That was 41 years ago now and I can see it in my mind as clear as if it was an hour ago

Aye, bring back the 60s & 70s cloggers, when it was a man's game played by proper men
