Norwich Fan Here - Bali Mumba

Will spare you all the 'always had a soft spot for Sunderland' nonsense and I know it always looks a bit weird when fans of other teams sign up to a forum!

But really curious about Bali Mumba and what his situation was at Sunderland?

I vaguely remembering us signing him for a few hundred grand, and a few of our fans said he looked decent at right back in pre-season.

All of a sudden he's come on for the last 25 minutes yesterday against Swansea, who are a bloody good team at the minute, and basically torn them to shreds down the left side, turned them inside out and our plan B for that game when we dominated possession but were struggling to break Swansea down was basically just give it to Mumba!

Started the move from which we scored the only goal of the game.

I don't want to get too excited, and definitely not here to antagonise, but I can honestly say that this was the most impressive debut I've seen from a kid at Norwich in 35 years of following and I've seen Craig Bellamy, James Maddison, Max Aarons, Danny Mills, Todd Cantwell etc... all come into the side over the years.

Our scouting system has obviously identified him as a potential gem, but was he highly thought of at Sunderland? Looks like he's gone from playing for North Shields to looking like he simply has to start for us against Middlesbrough!
You seem an alright person. But your timing is terrible mate .

Thats exactly why you're on here. Its clear as day from a quick look on here what our thoughts are on this.

I said in the summer he'd be lucky to play 10 league games for you all season. I guess he might just get that run in the team?

Not sure really, we have a left back and left sided player out injured, but Mumba is actually our back up right back. But if he can play left side and right side then wouldn't surprise me if he did manage more than 10?

No idea really, Farke really good at bringing through youngers... Jamal Lewis came out of nowhere really. Farke came into, liked the look of him and just put him in the team, don't think he'd ever really been identified as one of the better prospects and hadn't been involved with the first team. He never looked back, just stayed in the side and then moved to Newcastle for £15m-£20m.

Ben Godfrey was out on loan to League One as a defensive midfielder, Farke just said "you're a centre back", stuck him in the side, and he just stayed in the side as a centre back. Next thing we know Rio Ferdinand is identifying him as a top class centre back and Everton are paying £25m for him.

So I have no idea what this really means for Mumba, but Farke isn't scared to keep senior pros out of the team for a kid... pretty much what he did with Todd Cantwell and Max Aarons as well, just decided they were good enough and that was that!

To be fair to the OP, he’s come on and asked respectfully. Decent opposing fans shouldn’t be told to fuck off

Mumba - frustrating as he looked talented but got zero opportunity, given how shit we are it was a perfect time to blood him. In the end, we’ve sold for the first decent offer. Whether he’s a top player or not, time will tell, but we sold him on the cheap

Think it’s quite deliberate actually

Is there a significant reason why this particular day/moment in time is really bad?

Not deliberate if so, should perhaps bare in mind that there was a long wait to have my account approved by an admin and I wanted to ask this question as soon as our game finished yesterday - if that changes anything?

if he's as good as you're saying, then i hope not!!!!!

Apologies!

I do feel a bit bad now to be honest, was genuinely just curious because to us Norwich fans he's just come out of absolutely nowhere.

When you've just been in the Prem and you see the fee of £350k you sort of assume they are going to be playing U23 football or straight out on loan, so hadn't even bothered to check out his wikipedia or anything, players signed for U23's come and go all the time. So was a massive shock to see him come on and do so well yesterday at that level.
Don't apologise, take the good with the bad.

Guys,

I am still none the wiser why this is really bad timing, I apologise if I've committed a huge faux-pas (I did have a wait to post while awaiting admin approval), will just log off and jog on (feel a bit of a saddo for being on another clubs forum as it is).

Good luck whenever you play the Suffolk scum.

Cheers.

He was worth money therefore he was sold because our owners have less money than the vast majority of fans.

He was identified as a great prospect but the basically just completely wasted him and sold him for peanuts. The performance he put in for you yesterday is exactly what we need but we didnt give him the chance he deserved. Hopefully he continues for Norwich

It was obvious to anyone that knew football that this transfer was a f***ing mistake.

Apparently as he only had a year left on his contract and was stalling on negotiations due to limited game time meant all we could get was £350K. We could have held out for more in a tribunal. The arseholes incharge couldn't give a fuck about potential though as they want to sell up as soon as possible and don't care about the future. Take the money and run is their mantra

Wasn’t going to make the grade at Sunderland , went on loan to South Shields and they improved him as a player so earned a move to a bigger club . Good luck to him

If we had any of those players that you’ve named currently coming through then they also wouldn’t be in our squad because the likes of Power, McLaughlin, Dobson, Graham, O’Brien are senior pros that hold the shirt according to PP.

Funnily enough we also let go Logan Pye and Joe Hugill over the summer, Pye has his first call up to England 18s and Hugill is up for 23s player of the month alongside our own Benji Kimpioka who has played a grand total of 6 minutes first team football after scoring his first League 1 goal off the bench against Coventry in November 2019.

Phil Parkinson and Stewart Donald are wankers.

Feel a bit sorry for you all really.... we signed Sam McCallum for £1.2m rising to £3m from Coventry after he played 25 games in League One for them, and he has been deemed not ready by Farke and sent back out on loan to Coventry.

So Farke must really rate Bali Mumba, who I think we all thought at that price would just go straight back out on loan, but instead been put straight into the first team squad!

Does look like you have people at the club who don't understand / appreciate the value of young talent, it is just a big surprise to us as we thought perhaps McCallum at that price would be brought into the fold rather than Mumba.

Hopefully you've got a sell on percentage though hey? York City got a few million of the Ben Godfrey fee, and Coventry got a couple of million out of the James Maddison fee.

With a bit of luck you'll have more competent people in charge by the time any sell on clauses pay dividends.
He’s actually a centre midfielder but he’s versatile

Wasn’t Stieppermann a left back and all of a sudden Farke put him behind the striker?

TAA was a centre mid till he started playing right back.

Should have been in our first team
Squad but instead we decided to load it with journeyman league one plodders in the hope of getting a quick promotion. That failed and yet we seem to have continued along the same path. What could have been an exciting time for the club despite our lowly position in the ladder has turned into an absolute shit show. Even if we manage to scrape a bit of short term success we are likely fucked for a few years without wealthy ambitious owners.
Pleased for the lad always thought he looked a good player, hope he does well for Norwich.

Let him go for fuck all despite having potential, not that Parkinson would have played him. Mind, some of the experts on here told us he was shite and would do nothing.

Rank the state of our youth development.
