No More Petrol Cars from 2030

Just mildly interested to see how far away that was. Thousands of haulage vehicles on the roads at the minute with big diesel engines. I'd guess it would take way more battery power to pull 40 ton than it does to drive a small hatchback.

Could use gas instead, as they power busses this way as a greener alternative

Ok - but the ban doesn’t include trucks. I know Daimler, Tesla and Volvo all have working prototypes - have to check but I’m sure at least one is going to market next year.

The bold bit about bikes being no where near roads.

A few reasons really. Humans make mistakes, we aren't perfect. Taking that into consideration I don't think its clever to have a bicycle share the same road space as a 2 tonne vehicle - Driven by Kev.

But the law is law and as such cyclists are allowed to use the road. That is their right and it's up to them if they want to take the risk, I certainly wouldn't. In an ideal world we would have proper fit for purpose bike lanes separate from the road, as that is common sense.

Once they make a van that has a range of 400/500 or even 300 with rapid charging ill be switching but currently the 150 max (thats on a summer day without any electrics on) and the slow charging at the limited number of charging points just doesnt work. Would probably save me in the long run even with the additional cost of the purchase price.

Imagine not wanting children to breathe in filthy air. Bloody hippies.

Anyway, we need fewer cars not newer cars. People are living more locally than they've done in decades thanks to this pandemic. Would be good to start looking at connecting residential areas to schools, bus stations, shops etc with good walking and cycling infrastructure so people can potentially leave their car on their drive unless they need to make long distance travel.

I know for a fact we'll make a mess of charging infrastructure for these cars and end up with wires all over and charging points all over the footways.
Too much opportunity for blame claims for that. It’s a non starter

9 years away is not that faraway. Should have left it at 2040 to bring it in. Will the UK have enough electricity supply to charge millions of cars? Thousands of petrol tanker drivers, petrol station workers to lose their jobs? I can see once there up and running taxes will be thrown on charging your car up to replace lost petrol taxes. Sounds just a total clart on and hassle for minimal environmental benefit if you include the electricity production and vehicle manufacture and the batteries. Would dread travelling long distances or in winter. Will fire engines, ambulances, formula one cars etc be exempt and does this mean the end of the luxury car market in UK for buying stuff like Ferraris etc? Boris Johnson to announce 2030 diesel and electric cars sale ban
Get with the changes man. Electric cars have far better performance and sports cars will soon be electric. They're also massive environmental benefits, especially not having exhaust fumes all around schools etc.

Travelling long distances is easy enough, you just have to stop every 2 hours, which you should do anyway.
I’d have no problem driving an electric car like if it was gunna be cost efficient.

How many people can realistically afford a 23 grand Nissan Leaf and whatever the cost is for a charging station at home etc. I certainly can’t.

I understand you can get cheaper used ones but still, not everyone can afford that either. Some people rely on cheap used cars to get to work and bring in the pennies.
Home charging port for me was free. You can lease a leaf for £240 a month.

3 hours at 70mph

One of the first things the Tories did when they got a majority in 2015 was withdraw investment and reduce subsidies in renewal energy (I knarr cos my job was made redundant!). Mad how much politicians from the same party gan rounds in circles.

Anyhow, Today on R4 is worth a listen. Lots of experts talking sense rather than just political soundbites.
