No More Petrol Cars from 2030

Owa lass works about 15 min walk away, but uses the car mainly cos she doesn't feel safe walking through a dark industrial estate at night
Would it make a difference if it was well lit? Or is it also walking through an industrial estate that out of hours has a lack of other people around? Subways are another good example of the safety mindset. Some people won't use them because they don't feel safe going through them. And to be honest there are a few I've been through that I've later avoided as there was just something about them I felt when going through them.
 
9 years away is not that faraway. Should have left it at 2040 to bring it in. Will the UK have enough electricity supply to charge millions of cars? Thousands of petrol tanker drivers, petrol station workers to lose their jobs? I can see once there up and running taxes will be thrown on charging your car up to replace lost petrol taxes. Sounds just a total clart on and hassle for minimal environmental benefit if you include the electricity production and vehicle manufacture and the batteries. Would dread travelling long distances or in winter. Will fire engines, ambulances, formula one cars etc be exempt and does this mean the end of the luxury car market in UK for buying stuff like Ferraris etc? There was a story doing the rounds the other day saying that Sunak wants to start making people pay to drive on some (possibly most) roads to replace the lost revenue.

Probably not, she scares really easily.
 
Also struggling to understand why we need charging points at the kerbside. Is there a reason for this? Can existing petrol stations not just be upgraded with rapid charging points?

Which is why people should be given a viable alternative so they can walk and cycle. Most trips people make are local, under a few miles, we're talking 10 to 15 minute cycles here. It's just never considered as an option because its terrifying to cycle on hostile roads.

I mean cyclists should be no-where near the roads in fairness, but I generally want to live as long as possible and have common sense. All towns and cities should be building proper, fit for purpose cycle lanes separate from the roads. Would be a bit harder in rural areas though.

I worked on that white paper for teh DfT about 10 years ago. They have all the info just ready to roll it out
 
And will that be in addition to the existing duties already in existence for vehicles or a direct replacement?

Emphasis will be to maximise revenue but also to change road use behavior to reward/punish using types of roads at certain times of day etc

Im shocked. I would have thought they would leave it and add pay-per-drive tariff on top. Obviously current tax advantages of owning EV will disappear in time
At this very moment almost 1/3 of UK electricity is being produced from wind. People were saying that was impossible 10 years ago.
I signed up with octopus for gas/electric on the basis their electricity is all from renewable sources (and it was cheaper too ;) )

Just mildly interested to see how far away that was. Thousands of haulage vehicles on the roads at the minute with big diesel engines. I'd guess it would take way more battery power to pull 40 ton than it does to drive a small hatchback.

The govt of the day that implements it may decide to do a mix - a one off cost per vehicle per year and then per usage. At the time the conclusion was that it was fairer to implement a consumption/per use fee

there are already big electric trucks with ranges of c.150 miles
