I live in s terrace sideways on from the street, 50 yards to the car. i can’t see how you could practically and safely charge a car from that distance. Much more thinking required here.
do you park anywhere away from your home for 20 minutes plus on a regular basis eg Pub, Supermarket etc?

How many people actually need to use a car in an average week? (before Covid struck) And how many use a car because they don't want to use an alternative form of transport for whatever reason?

Just I've known some people who live at most a 5-10 minute walk away from work drive to work once they passed their test. That's a mental mindset that needs to change. However, since car ownership became a more viable thing for more people life decisions have been made around where a car can get them. Moving somewhere that'd mean a 60 minute walk to work and has no bus service? Fine because you've got a car. And as more people drove, government and council planning decisions for places seemed to get more car orientated.

Owa lass works about 15 min walk away, but uses the car mainly cos she doesn't feel safe walking through a dark industrial estate at night

This announcement is a nice little distraction from the ongoing brexit and covid 19 fuck ups. Gives boris a few days breathing space to wonder what to do now his advisors have given him the elbow while he pretends to self isolate.

Also struggling to understand why we need charging points at the kerbside. Is there a reason for this? Can existing petrol stations not just be upgraded with rapid charging points?
It would be interesting to compare the costs of owning a car for the average person and the cost of getting taxis everywhere instead.
Which is why people should be given a viable alternative so they can walk and cycle. Most trips people make are local, under a few miles, we're talking 10 to 15 minute cycles here. It's just never considered as an option because its terrifying to cycle on hostile roads.
