No More Petrol Cars from 2030

So many just think about how it is now and can't get that out their mindset that things change and we evolve.

Some would still be on a horse and cart
When I lived in Earls court I just used a zipcar if I needed one and that was 8 years ago. Most big cities will have these by now and its the way forward. we have 4 cars in this house and when not in lock-down they are used for a combined 4hrs per day maximum and that is if I'm doing my commute to the midlands

How will it kill the caravan holiday.. do people fill.up at the caravan site now? Cars can be charged at a point off site if needed.. you are on holiday.. so what if you need to park up and charge while you have a cream.tea

A lot more infrastructure is going in now. I'm seeing it all the time. Won't be waits of a few hours at all

I'm not seeing much hoing on up here.
I did see a report suggesting that we're miles off the level needed to reach this target.

Maybe this is part of the post covid economic recovery manufacturing boost. Cos it does need massively ramping up to meet this target
cars can travel 200+ miles on a full charge now and that will improve over time - you will have plenty of options. Once we get used to not owning a car then you could see options to drop off and get a replacement car half way.

And the ones that have them ranges cost the same as the price of a house. I know prices should come down, but we're currently miles off

I’d have no problem driving an electric car like if it was gunna be cost efficient.

How many people can realistically afford a 23 grand Nissan Leaf and whatever the cost is for a charging station at home etc. I certainly can’t.

I understand you can get cheaper used ones but still, not everyone can afford that either. Some people rely on cheap used cars to get to work and bring in the pennies.
Part of the price difference is the fact it’s a small seller currently, the higher the sales the cheaper they’ll be.

How long do you reckon...and you are assuming people will still own cars

Are there any vehicles capable of pulling a modern 6 berth caravan? For more than a few miles?

New development in Epping will have only 20 spaces between 80 flats. I think the idea is to put a laid of pool cars in those spaces so people can just rent them by the hour or two to do shopping etc.. be seeing far more of this.

For many families the cars sit idle most the time
In theory a good idea. However mingers are gonna have the car a shit tip.

Gonna have to concrete over lots of countryside to build the huge car parks which will be needed.

If it wasnt for the cost I'd have an ev now.

And this is only new cars which I'd never buy so I dont see this affecting me till used cars have to be electric.

Have they set a date for total ban on petrol and diesel cars

That won't happen, as you can't ban classic cars. Over time the number of petrol cars will just dwindle down naturally until its basically just collectors cars left.

no, but they call in a petrol station for 5 mins to fill the tank, vs an hour + to recharge. My car can tow my caravan to the lakes, I can sit and chill in the lakes for a long weekend, then tow back, all on one tank. I’d have to find somewhere to recharge while over there, because sites don’t have the infrastructure for that kind of power draw from multiple cars charging.

I can go to sites with no electric, I have a solar panel for powering the tv, charging phones etc, that would be no good for charging a EV

Knowing our government, they’ll move the goal posts as usual and it’ll be extended, especially when it dawns on them the cost and timings of installation of the required charging infrastructure will not marry up with the 2030 deadline.

Put your life savings on it.

How do you charge the car if you have to park outside in the street? Til that's sorted this is just plain ridiculous.
I live in semi detached with a garage and driveway and pod point did an assessment and decided they couldn't put a point in where we live. Can't see the infrastructure being anywhere near ready for everyone to drive electric cars in 10 years.

I wonder how many people here buy new cars anyway? The vast majority of us will be driving old cars, so banning sales of new petrol/diesel cars from 2030 will mean we will be driving them and buying used ones until 2040/2050 anyway.

The cars are getting there, but the charging infrastructure is going to be the big issue. Or if we go down the hydrogen fuel cell route, the infrastructure for producing and distributing that.
