No More Petrol Cars from 2030

I think as cars become more autonomous the need for absolutely everyone to have one will fade. In big cities short term rentals should be fine for example.

New development in Epping will have only 20 spaces between 80 flats. I think the idea is to put a laid of pool cars in those spaces so people can just rent them by the hour or two to do shopping etc.. be seeing far more of this.

For many families the cars sit idle most the time

20 minute charges once a week would do for many if range gets to 300 miles.

That's not exctly a show stopper especially if you ca. Do it while do your shopping etc
That's true too. Can't see why they can't just standardise the batteries and have ready charged ones ready to go in s minute.

It will kill the great British caravan holiday. I know alko who makes most caravan chassis are developing one with an onboard battery and small motor to help supplement it but still as it is caravan sites mains supplies are not powerful enough to charge EV, a lot go to site that have no mains supply.

I’d have no problem driving an electric car like if it was gunna be cost efficient.

How many people can realistically afford a 23 grand Nissan Leaf and whatever the cost is for a charging station at home etc. I certainly can’t.

I understand you can get cheaper used ones but still, not everyone can afford that either. Some people rely on cheap used cars to get to work and bring in the pennies.

Economies of scale. The price will come down the more they sell.

My concern is the charging infrastructure, lack of range & time it takes to charge if you're going away somewhere like Cornwall or Scotish Highlands

Sunderland would be a great location for the town heated by hydrogen given where it's gonna be generated.

I think it's a bit ambitious to have all the infrastructure there by 2030 but if it's highly unlikely your gonna be around by then you could promise the moon on a stick.

I expect my shares in the UK's largest green energy producer will gan through the roof this morning!

Takes 30 minutes to recharge a battery so if you are doing a long drive just factor in a break - you should do anyway if doing that sort of journey

Normally would just stop for 15 mind, but in rural parts there isn't proper service stations & could be a bit of a queue. So need to wait a few hours

9 years away is not that faraway. Should have left it at 2040 to bring it in. Will the UK have enough electricity supply to charge millions of cars? Thousands of petrol tanker drivers, petrol station workers to lose their jobs? I can see once there up and running taxes will be thrown on charging your car up to replace lost petrol taxes. Sounds just a total clart on and hassle for minimal environmental benefit if you include the electricity production and vehicle manufacture and the batteries. Would dread travelling long distances or in winter. Will fire engines, ambulances, formula one cars etc be exempt and does this mean the end of the luxury car market in UK for buying stuff like Ferraris etc? Boris Johnson to announce 2030 diesel and electric cars sale ban
The power grid is creaking already. Major work needed on its infastructure. Elv points in their infancy. Il be supprised if it happens, but if it keeps the tree huggers happy for a few years then mission accomplished by the Tories.

How will it kill the caravan holiday.. do people fill.up at the caravan site now? Cars can be charged at a point off site if needed.. you are on holiday.. so what if you need to park up and charge while you have a cream.tea

A lot more infrastructure is going in now. I'm seeing it all the time. Won't be waits of a few hours at all

cars can travel 200+ miles on a full charge now and that will improve over time - you will have plenty of options. Once we get used to not owning a car then you could see options to drop off and get a replacement car half way.

So many just think about how it is now and can't get that out their mindset that things change and we evolve.

Some would still be on a horse and cart

I've already got my 4.0L Straight 6 Jeep Wrangler in the garage, for when the apocalypse comes. The electric car drivers won't even make it to the hills.
Nat

You are on the right lines and I applaud that but - a straight 6? Come on man you still have time to upgrade to a big V8.

Good luck.👍
