No More Petrol Cars from 2030

I was driving down a residential street a few weeks back and two people were stood talking in the middle of the road. They didn’t hear me approach from behind and I was too polite to beep at them. After about 15 seconds they realised something was there and they moved.

It’s whisper quiet.

I have an absolute blast leaving pretty much every conventional car for dead.

The only non-EV I’ve had keep up with me was an A45 AMG.

I guess it depends on what you consider fun. I totally get why people think they’re soulless, and quiet and dreary, but it’s wicked fun flooring it.
Do you break the speed limit?

Average UK commute is 23 mile round trip so they cater for all of that which is a big chunk.

It may well be, but that still doesn't stop you having to recharge the thing at least once for a decent trip.

I'll stick to a normal car thanks.

It’s doable but requires the car and the battery swap station to be designed to be able to robotically isolate a high voltage power system, remove it and load in a new one. The costs turned out to be massive.

I thought it was a great idea that made a lot of sense, have a look on YouTube TED talk for a presentation by Shai Agassi. I remember posting aboutEV being the future and about this being the way to solve it.

truth be told, battery technology is improving so fast that range issues will be a thing of the past, and that level of investment not seen as viable.

reminds me of one Mobile company I worked for were planning on installing WiFi access points in lampposts for use with mobiles, and another company trying to get a foothold with Wi-Max to give extended WiFi coverage for urban areas

then 4g took off

I can imagine but speed alone gets boring quickly. Good handling and 'character' is more fun. ;)

These same discussions were had down the pub in the 80's when home computers were becoming available - and even more recently who remembers the "World Wide Wait"
I remember in 1977 or 78 some student got a summer job working on the same site as me and he was talking about him and his mate both having just bought computers. I asked him what he does with it and he said him and his mate can send message to each other via a phone line and they can read the message on a tv monitor. I laughed and said why don't you just phone him then instead , it's pointless, it'll never catch on. OOOPS
I don’t need to, the acceleration alone is enough for me
That's a Section 59. People have been prosecuted for "harsh acceleration" in the past even though they haven't broken any speed limits.

Had an EV for 11 months now and the novelty hasn’t worn off for me yet, I still look forward to driving it each day which was never the case with a diesel Audi. It’s so much better in almost every aspect.

One thing I still will say is that the public charging network is still shit, certainly round south Tyneside anyway. If I didn’t have a charger at home it would be a struggle.

To me it seams EV's are mostly for people who don't need a car and could be commuting using public transport anyway.

If batteries are so efficient how come aircraft don't use them? And those solar powered condom covered gliders don't count.

Weight and range... Lighter batteries with greater range then you may see it.. isnt there yet but they will

Which you will have to fill with fuel fir a decent trip.

I live in shields, work in Durham, and have to visit various building sites around the north east abs often U.K., so no, public transport world to cut it for me.

batteries not yet there for planes due to weight and range, but will come.

that the point here with any new technology - whilst some will fail others wil become standard rapidly. Broadband and Smartphones are almost essentials nowadays

Electric engines are being produce now for shorthaul

Whey that's understandable.

TBF the model 3 seems to be the best of the lot so far.

I never have any problems charging now, so the Infrastucture is already here, it just needs to keep up with demand.

I don’t understand how driving a car with inferior power and torque can be more enjoyable? More familiar i agree but EVs are at more fun.

So drive to a charging point, the fast ones are 20-30 mins, filling your car take 5-10 depending on if there is a queue paying.

The infrastructure is nowhere near being ready. Maybe now for the limited numbers, but if all new cars are EV not a chance its ready. It needs massive work in next 10 years

i’ve driven a tesla, it was quick with loads of tech but i personally found it a bit bland and boring. I’ve also driven civic type r / golf r / megane rs and found them all a better drive for me, more involving and fun. I know which i’d buy now, all about opinions though

Ah no they're not perfect I just mean if they covered nearly everyone's commute and they have say 300 mile range that makes them suitable for a hell of a lot of people.
Charging is improving massively.
I just think of mine like a phone now, run it for a week or so and when it gets to 70 mile or so plug it in overnight, wake up to a full tank, used to hate having to go for fuel anyway.

Seems logical to have some kind of multi-battery, where some of it is replacable (c.50-100m range) and some of it stays in the car.

Exactly, drive in, tap contactless card, desposit your battery into the charger and collect charged battery. Install. Drive off
Quicker than filling with petrol.

Good luck with carrying the batteries about, the batteries in a Tesla weigh about half a tonne

I work in Ashington so have a 50 mile round trip and its one of the main reasons I went electric, I certainly couldn't use public transport
I think it'll become law they need to make some kind of noise. Some EVs - mine for example - makes a noise at speeds up to 30mph, especially for blind people
I think it comes in soon

Its actually load of small batteries rather than one mashoosive one isn't it?

How heavy would a removable one that does, say 75 miles, be?

Nee offence but it sounds like you’ve never driven a decent car.

I cant think of any fun EV - Unless you measure fun as accelerating quickly for a bit in silence.
I dunno like and don't get me wrong I still love petrol cars but mine is as enjoyable to drive as my S5 was from 3 years ago, especially on windy roads as you can pretty much drive 1 pedal if you set it up right.

What car you driving?

Dunno but if mine is full in reality its 260 miles but that literally is the whole floor of the car and its down there for a reason for centre of gravity and weight distribution so to remove say a quarter from that low would be very difficult I think. Slide out tray at the back?
