No More Petrol Cars from 2030

I never have any problems charging now, so the Infrastucture is already here, it just needs to keep up with demand.

I don’t understand how driving a car with inferior power and torque can be more enjoyable? More familiar i agree but EVs are at more fun.

So drive to a charging point, the fast ones are 20-30 mins, filling your car take 5-10 depending on if there is a queue paying.
How many fast charging points are there? What happens when there's a queue for them?
 
Hot swap batteries should solve the problem.
Seems logical to have some kind of multi-battery, where some of it is replacable (c.50-100m range) and some of it stays in the car.
That's true too. Can't see why they can't just standardise the batteries and have ready charged ones ready to go in s minute.

Quicker than filling with petrol.

Whats the crack with classic cars, I have a 73' Stag hopefully still be able to get Petrol for it after 2030?

Petrol cars aren't being banned, just the sale of new ones. How many cars are on the road now that are over 10 or 15 year old?

The amount of petrol stations will gradually reduce, but you should be able to buy petrol easily upto the 2050's

Idea was already tried, I thought it was great, only Nissan Renault really ran with it. It was a company called Better Place, it went bust as the infrastructure costs to set up battery swap stations proved unsustainable.
The cost of the batteries puts a fly in the ointment marra.
In such an arrangement, you woouldnt own the battery, you would lease it.

How will that work though as the size of my batteries cover nearly the whole floor pan of the car like most i think. I think some are key to the structure and integrity. I'll have to do some googling

But what if a certain industry that already has locations exactly where you need them, and is perfect for cars to drive in and our set this up instead....

A bottle of gas doesn't cost thousands of pounds though.

But what if a certain industry that already has locations exactly where you need them, and is perfect for cars to drive in and our set this up instead....
It’s doable but requires the car and the battery swap station to be designed to be able to robotically isolate a high voltage power system, remove it and load in a new one. The costs turned out to be massive.

I thought it was a great idea that made a lot of sense, have a look on YouTube TED talk for a presentation by Shai Agassi. I remember posting aboutEV being the future and about this being the way to solve it.

truth be told, battery technology is improving so fast that range issues will be a thing of the past, and that level of investment not seen as viable.
 
We are not far off where you will be able to go and top up a 300 mile range in 20 minutes.

They are also phenomenally quick. The sporty version of the new Kia coming out next year will supposedly go to 60 in under 3 seconds.

Id be more worried about the number of people who will wrap themselves around lampposts rather then the number who need to use them to charge...

I think it'll become law they need to make some kind of noise. Some EVs - mine for example - makes a noise at speeds up to 30mph, especially for blind people
Aye - I'm certain Durham council had a small fleet of minibuses that were used to take people up to the cathedral and they had to add some sort of fake engine noise because of the number of close encounters with unwary pedestrians.
 
Listened to an electrical engineer on the radio earlier who was saying that there’s absolutely shit loads of work thatll need doing nationwide for the grid to be able to cope with the increased power demand as well as all the work involving charging points. So there’s no way it’ll all
Be ready in ten years. Obviously Johnson didn’t have Cummings to tell him all this when he came out with this big announcement.

I cant think of any fun EV - Unless you measure fun as accelerating quickly for a bit in silence.

Aye - I'm certain Durham council had a small fleet of minibuses that were used to take people up to the cathedral and they had to add some sort of fake engine noise because of the number of close encounters with unwary pedestrians.

I was driving down a residential street a few weeks back and two people were stood talking in the middle of the road. They didn’t hear me approach from behind and I was too polite to beep at them. After about 15 seconds they realised something was there and they moved.

It’s whisper quiet.

I have an absolute blast leaving pretty much every conventional car for dead.

The only non-EV I’ve had keep up with me was an A45 AMG.

I guess it depends on what you consider fun. I totally get why people think they’re soulless, and quiet and dreary, but it’s wicked fun flooring it.
