No More Petrol Cars from 2030

My brothers wife has a Tesla and he hates it. He lives in CLS, drove down to boro to pick me up with 70% charge, so I could collect my car just outside Otley, Leeds. He had to go into Leeds to charge it up for the journey back.

How are electric car batteries affected by periods of cold weather?

As they get older, will there be issues of them discharging completely when it's cold, leaving you stranded? I know it happens with petrol and diesel cars, especially when the battery is getting on a bit.

At least with a petrol/diesel car you could bump start it or get a booster charge from someone with jump leads. I may be wrong, but I can't see that being an option with an electric car?

why didn't he charge it overnight?

Ok - that answers the question about the effects of battery age on range and also how temperature affects it but it doesn't mention anything about a complete discharge of the battery and how to get moving again if that type of emergency happens.

Portable charger?
Good call - they would have to be available in a similar size to the type of petrol/diesel cans currently available and hold enough juice to conceivably get you to the nearest charging point. If they were any bigger you'd be compromising the practicality of your car due to the amount of space they would take up.

Performance and technology. I am referring only to the regular cars you see on the road, not inclusive of supercars. Why would you want any of BMW or Mercedes’ top efforts when you could have a better, quicker Tesla S?

Read my posts on this thread. The range is their weakpoint. They might be quicker than the Audis/BMWs/Mercs, but they will keep going while you have to pull over to charge up.

you can buy portable chargers. like you have for a phone - expensive at moment mind

With the EU possible bringing this ban even further forward could be mitigated by the fact that demand will be falling.

the price of fuel won't be driven by availability but by "the need to save the planet"
I agree the need to reduce emissions, just making the point that this also creates an opportunity to pull in some much-needed revenue
