9 years away is not that faraway. Should have left it at 2040 to bring it in. Will the UK have enough electricity supply to charge millions of cars? Thousands of petrol tanker drivers, petrol station workers to lose their jobs? I can see once there up and running taxes will be thrown on charging your car up to replace lost petrol taxes. Sounds just a total clart on and hassle for minimal environmental benefit if you include the electricity production and vehicle manufacture and the batteries. Would dread travelling long distances or in winter. Will fire engines, ambulances, formula one cars etc be exempt and does this mean the end of the luxury car market in UK for buying stuff like Ferraris etc? Boris Johnson to announce 2030 diesel and electric cars sale ban

It's just the production of new cars. There'll be a good ten years of existing cars still floating about and the target can be moved.
I hope so! as it's gonna make owning a car more difficult for people less affluent. Even if new electric cars reduce in price still expensive and 2nd hand petrol car prices probably go up and big Car Tax rises for owning petrol cars to deter ownership. Probably in a couple of years it will get ditched

Heard something a while ago about electric vehicles apparently we literally don't have enough resources on the planet to replace every vehicle with an electric car. There's an element they use which is very rare and very expensive and there's not enough of it to go around.

I’d have no problem driving an electric car like if it was gunna be cost efficient.

How many people can realistically afford a 23 grand Nissan Leaf and whatever the cost is for a charging station at home etc. I certainly can’t.

I understand you can get cheaper used ones but still, not everyone can afford that either. Some people rely on cheap used cars to get to work and bring in the pennies.

Cobalt. There are battery options that don't include it afaik.

Could be staggered. Petrol cars until say, 2035 if they’re the lowest possible emissions category.

I’ve never driven anything horrendously polluting and have no idea why people do

Most people don’t buy a car based on how polluting it is though do they? Comfort, cost, practicality, spec, refinement just to name a few. Then add to that that not all people have the same interest/circumstance regarding their motors. They may want/need to buy something that just happens to be worse on emissions. And let’s not forget that why we piss about in our small diesels and argue over which is more environmentally friendly, most yanks’ daily driver is a 4.5ltr pickup truck!

Also what is not horrendously polluting in your eyes? A 2.0 petrol these days can be ‘cleaner’ than a 7 year old 1.6tdi

I'd love to know how we are gonna charge them on the street. Even then it will need to be a universal system - parking's bad enough in most places before fighting for a dedicated charge point.

I think as cars become more autonomous the need for absolutely everyone to have one will fade. In big cities short term rentals should be fine for example.
I wrote some articles on this a while back. It's a long way off but the idea is to have giant charging car parks outside of cities and you just order one on your phone as and when you need one. Just like ordering a taxi really.
I like the idea but it will take a long time to adjust the mindset of car ownership. I'm a pay outright and keep a car for years type.

What's going to become of the thousands of petrol stations?

Halfway on your camping holidays, just nipping into Scotch Corner for a Ginsters and a six hour wait while you charge the fucker.
