Nigel Clough

Why his name ever gets mentioned is beyond me, very average at best
Basically because he is Clough's son. He's done nothing of note. He's managed two relatively big clubs, Derby and Sheffield U and didn't tear up trees at either

The LMA sent out a circular to their members yesterday informing them of a vacancy which has just arisen. Wonder how many replies they got of " not f***ing likely!"
There'll be loads of managers interested in it. Sadly the vast bulk will be crap.

Not for me.

His father had that special ingredient that made him such a successful manager. I don't see such things in Nigel, apart from being a manager that has had to go back to the same club to try and get some relative success, as he's failed elsewhere.

Granted, at Derby he was shafted over.

Uninspiring IMO and not what we need. Doubt he would beable to handle big players egos hence why he's at Burton

What would be interesting is a break down of the £1200 million. I reckon he might have £100 million in liquid assets. I.e. A couple of days but then there is the problem of capital gains tax. I'm sure someone on here might know.

Good points. I accept he might not have the means to immediately pay off our debt.

Have not seen a thread on him, so putting my backing to him. Did well at Burton with absolutely no money at all and listened to an interview with him 2 weeks ago, he seemed very forward thinking and intelligent.

Don't think you could call his early days at Burton as making big money signings - Burton were part time then.

History will be kind to his time at Derby. Took over them at a low ebb, slashed the wage budget, invested in the academy and started from scratch. Took a long term view and his successors seem to have spent a fortune (money he never had) and haven't got very far.

Some of his signings at Derby have been inspired - and are about the level we'll be looking at next season (Bryson, Keogh, Martin etc).

He also left Sheffield in a better state than he found it, with two cup semi finals in two seasons.

Last season at Burton he defied the odds and kept them up on an absolute shoestring, winning the mini Midlands league too with wins against Derby, Forest, Birmingham, Sheffield Wednesday etc.

I'm not saying he'd be a good fit for Sunderland but we should be careful what (and who) we wish for. Bet there are quite a few Birmingham fans who wished they'd had a Clough style manager rather than a Zola

They weren't big money, but he was signing the likes of Gary Crosby, Darren Wassall etc from Forest and other league players, so they will have been paying big wages for a part times side hence attracting Clough in the first place.

History wont be kind to his time at Derby and neither are the fans, same at Sheff United. I'm amazed he isn't still in both jobs given what you're implying.

Did he play for Liverpool and England because of who his dad was? He's hardly a nobody!

He's not but his profile has always been higher because of his dad and he would never have been considered for the Derby job at the time without his surname being Clough, nor on here for the SAFC job.

I think we'll have to disagree - I think that most Derby fans are very grateful for what he achieved there given the state of the club (there are also quite a few who aren't!) - and again the Sheffield fans are split. Taking a club from the bottom of L1 to 7th in 2/3 of a season and then playoffs the next (plus two cup semi finals) isn't failure in my book. You also don't get on the LMA shortlist for manager of the year without doing something pretty decent at Burton - and you'll not find many other managers or journalists (or any of his players) who have a bad word to say about him.

Very interesting that Sam Rush (the chief exec that sacked him at Derby) has now been sacked himself for gross misconduct. I'm surprised Rush lasted as long as he did.

Burton have never paid wages about their station - either when they were non-league or now (and especially in the Championship)
