It does help though, a manager who has club connections is usually more likeable and will, generally, receive more grace from supporters if things are not going great. Have a feeling if the likes of McInnes comes in he will need to hit the ground running or he'll get pelters from the get go.

It doesn't help much when he's rank average.

The first part of your user name sums up the only person who would think it's a good appointment.

Done well at Burton but didn't do well anywhere else. No from me.

You could say the same for all the other candidates.

This is true like. We aren't going to get a top manager so we need to hope whichever average one we appoint gets better while he is here.

I think his record shows we would play canny football and have some good cup games. Although be inconsistent and fall short of the playoffs..

Of course he could well have learned from mistakes made..

Had a very similar conversation with a Derby fan at work. His take is that if the board think we're in serious trouble financially and have to stabilise then he's ideal. If we rightly or wrongly think we should be challenging next year then we should look elsewhere.

I think he was responsible for bringing Hendrick & Will Hughes through from the youth ranks so he's good in that respect. One other thing i remember was how the crowds fell away. Initially he put some real pride back in the club as he stopped the rot, a couple of seasons later crowds had dropped from 28000+ to below 22000, it was dour depressing football by the end.

Having said all that he left us pretty much mid-table having spent nowt while last season, £35 million+ spent & 5 managers later we've just finished about midtable again.

Very good player, decent enough bloke, average manager - not the worst name mentioned but still not sure he'd be able a job of this magnitude, seems to do well with smaller clubs with low expectations. (In case anyone hasn't noticed that isn't really us....)

Of all the options available I'd put Nigel Clough near the top, not convinced of any of the options to be completely honest but as said Clough seems more equipped than most.

+Has done a very good job at Burton who are easily the club with the smallest budget and infrastructure in the Championship, did well to better more reputable clubs like Forest, Wigan and Blackburn to stay up.
+Has Sunderland connections, obviously was born and raised (partially) in the North-East and there's not much need to speak about his dad's history with SAFC.
+Has managed somewhat similar clubs to us in Sheff Utd and Derby, admittedly he didn't pull up any trees at those clubs and his performance was more strengthen and maintain rather than clear, seamless progression.

Obviously looking at the forum Clough is definitely not flavour of the month with our fanbase, most seem to prefer McInnes or Monk etc but I think he offers as much as those two in terms of pedigree and performance.

Constructive thoughts welcomed. Mindless bollocks tolerated.

:D

He'll be in the top 1

Clough had to ship out a squadsworth of players who were overpaid then assemble a squad on less money for nowt. Then iirc the club were in a state where they could now be sold. They were and Clough was eased out. McLaren came in with money to burn.....
That's my recollection of it......same thing happened at Sheffield anarl. THAT may be SAFCs interest in him explained.

Not exactly true. McClaren actually took Clough's middle of the table team to the brink (last minute of the play-of final) of the Premier League without spending a penny. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013–14_Derby_County_F.C._season

Draw you own conclusions. e.g. McClaren is just a coach not a manager, and Nigel Clough is a consolidator, not a winner?

It took Clough several seasons to get Derby up to the middle of the Championship from near the bottom.

I'm not saying I want him at SAFC but he doesn't deserve the abuse he's been getting on here. I can also see why big clubs living in reduced circumstances may consider him a viable proposition.
