Tufty did loads better than Clough at Derby with the squad he assembled.

Let that sink in...
Clough had to ship out a squadsworth of players who were overpaid then assemble a squad on less money for nowt. Then iirc the club were in a state where they could now be sold. They were and Clough was eased out. McLaren came in with money to burn.....
That's my recollection of it......same thing happened at Sheffield anarl. THAT may be SAFCs interest in him explained.

I think Clough is one of those managers (like Eddie Howe) who just seems to be right for one club and that's Burton Albion where at his spells he's done really well.

Didn't seem to do much at Sheffield United or Derby, who both seemed to improve after he left and I'd worry he'd be the same here.

So, from what I've read on here, McInnes is the man for us, despite doing the sum of fuck all in English football or at any decent level. If you disagree you get pelters.
However, if you wouldn't mind Clough, who has several years of management experience in our leagues, and has connections to us, you get pelters.

I'm completely baffled.

If it wasn't for his dad, you likely wouldn't have a clue who he was. Possibly unfairly to say but he will have been given opportunities because of his father's managerial ability and everyone who has offered him a chance will have been hoping he'd replicate what his dad did. He's not a bad manager but he's a lower league manager. He has done nothing to earn the right to manage a club the size we are.

Have some pride mate. We're far bigger than Nigel Clough.

What do ou mean he would not have a clue who he was if not for his father, that's bollocks he was a very good footballer in his own right, very good

He played for Liverpool and England man

That's because you're weirdly xenophobic when it comes to the Scots rather than any knowledge you actually have of either of them as managers though.

Not according to this mate:

@steadybreeze, any thoughts on his time at Derby

Did the job he was bought in for at Derby. We were in a financial mess after successive managers spent serious money on crap players. His job was to trim the squad, bring in cheap replacements and stop us plummeting into the 1st division. He got some interesting players in for next to nothing, players like Craig Bryson & Johnny Russell but for everyone of the decent ones we also had a 'Connor Salmon'. He kept us up, then improved us a bit, then again but seemed to stall around midtable. He seemed to grow bitter and took to slagging players off on the local radio, it was obvious to most then that he wasnt going to take us any higher and i don't think he was trusted with a pot of money to push us to the next level.

His backroom staff were rank amateurish, being his brother and a few mates and his tactics involved trying to pinch a goal and then hanging on for the rest of the game, something he's done well at with Burton but less so with us.

He'll do a good job if he comes to Sunderland, probably steady the ship and get rid of all the slackers but he wont move the club forward more than that i don't think. When he left us the club was stable again and ready for McClaren to come in and splash the cash.

Only my opinion like, there are people at Derby who would have him back in a flash.

Had a very similar conversation with a Derby fan at work. His take is that if the board think we're in serious trouble financially and have to stabilise then he's ideal. If we rightly or wrongly think we should be challenging next year then we should look elsewhere.

Of all the options available I'd put Nigel Clough near the top, not convinced of any of the options to be completely honest but as said Clough seems more equipped than most.

+Has done a very good job at Burton who are easily the club with the smallest budget and infrastructure in the Championship, did well to better more reputable clubs like Forest, Wigan and Blackburn to stay up.
+Has Sunderland connections, obviously was born and raised (partially) in the North-East and there's not much need to speak about his dad's history with SAFC.
+Has managed somewhat similar clubs to us in Sheff Utd and Derby, admittedly he didn't pull up any trees at those clubs and his performance was more strengthen and maintain rather than clear, seamless progression.

Obviously looking at the forum Clough is definitely not flavour of the month with our fanbase, most seem to prefer McInnes or Monk etc but I think he offers as much as those two in terms of pedigree and performance.

Constructive thoughts welcomed. Mindless bollocks tolerated.

:D

People still go on as if he's a young manager. He's 51.

If he wasn't Brian's lad there wouldn't be much fuss about him. It's a no from me.

It does help though, a manager who has club connections is usually more likeable and will, generally, receive more grace from supporters if things are not going great. Have a feeling if the likes of McInnes comes in he will need to hit the ground running or he'll get pelters from the get go.
