Next England Captain

No doubt at the end of the 3rd test the position of Strauss as captain of England within the media will come into question. However looking at the Test side there are no obvious candidates to take over the helm. Fair enough Cook and Broad do the ODI stuff, but neither of them sit right for me as Test captain at the moment.

That leaves, Swann, Anderson, Trott, Bell and Prior, again none of those look like outstanding candidates. Despite his poor form, it seems the ECB have little choice but to stick with him.

Thoughts?

Cook seems to be the choice as things stand, with him having the ODI captaincy, it looks like they're getting him ready for when Strauss steps down.

Saying that, look at what the captaincy did to Strauss's batting. Cook is such a talented batsmen and (most of the time) reliable at the top of the order that it's too big a risk if the same thing happens to him.

My choice would be Prior. He's always animated behind the stumps, seems like a good communicator with his team mates and is in an ideal position to react to whatever is going on around him in the interests of the team. Batting at 7, he also has the big advantage over an opening batsmen that he doesn't have to make an immediate switch out of captain mode to batting mode.

Wicket keepers can make great vice captains because, from their position in the field, they have the best view of all that's happening. I reckon tht's as far as it should go though because the levels of concentration required by a top wickie are phenomenal and combining both jobs is too demanding.

Cook for me, without a doubt. Although if he stays in the team for another year or so and makes a few runs, I wouldn't bet against James Taylor. Already England Lions captain and has a first class average of almost 50. Only 22 year old too and has over 5000 first class runs. Seems very strong mentally.

That's a higher first class average than KP, Trott, Prior, Cook and Strauss, by the way.

Cook or KP

Strauss has never been a great captain, far too negative. Okay we have had some fantastic results under him but thats more to go with the tools available to him. Same as someone like Ponting (to a lesser extent) where he simply told McGrath to knock over the openers and then threw the ball to the best bowler ever to spin the rest out.

It will be Cook. Pietersen may or may nor pull on the England shirt again but there are far too many trust issues between KP and the board and KP and the players for him ever to be considered captain.

Strauss has been a very good captain in his own way. Its not just about being positive or negative its about fostering a great team spirit which was key to us achieveing as we did.

Surely this thread is a wind up!!

It is very clear that with Cook taking the ODI captaincy (from a point when he wasn't even in the side) that he is to be Strauss' successor. Since taking over that job the ODI team has performed brilliantly, and his own form has been outstanding. He is probably now the best opening in Test Cricket worldwide so to me its pretty obvious that he will be our next test captain.

If anyone disagrees and is prepared to offer me Even money just give me a shout.
