Newcastle vs Atromotis

Just about the perfect result tonight. A turgid lucky performance = more meaningless midweek games, more injuries more premier league points dropped. Champion

hmm, dont really understand your logic here fella. what with our new signings (and hopefully more to come) and possible building in jan / next summer, would you not want us to maybe push for 7th (with a bit of luck with who wins the cup that could get you into europe)? or would you just like us to steadily finish around 8th-12th, hoping the mags fuck up so we can laugh?

if you do well in the league (which i assume we all want to) then this comp is your reward, and the mags only had simp, ba and colo in the outfield 10 who will start on sunday so don;t know how this was 'perfect'. yes, they will start to use their cabayes, tiotes etc (if still there) the further they go in the comp, but tonight they did enough with a largely second team.

a team like us, newcastle, villa etc, what with the strenght of man city, utd, chelsea are very very unlikely to get into the CL (the mags nearly managed it last year), especially with teams like spurs, arse, liv battling it out for that last space, throw in strong sides like everton, and even getting into the europa league becomes hard - hell we aint managed it for 40 years. i would love to see us mixing it with the likes of inter milan, liverpool, lyon, bilbao

but yeah, lets try and avoid it by finishing 8th every year and if the mags show a bit ambition maybe we can finish above them - if thas your season ambition then fair enough, seems a bit pathetic to me. each to their own and all that

a quick wiki search shows the following team have 'qualified'

a. madrid
spurs
leverkusen
napoli
lyon
munchengladbach
udinese
newcastle
liverpool
stuttgart
lazio
PSV

plus those finishing third in their UCL groups

but i forgot we are sunderland afc, 'the lads', too big to be mixing with the likes of these minnows like

yep, im a big fan of it.

ok, over the course of the season it may cause injuries (taylor), an will prob cost you a few points and thus 1 or 2 places over the season

BUT

- chance to play some different and exciting sides rather than your stokes, wba's, norwich's every season
- extra tv games (a chance for everyone to see their club on mainstream channels)
- raise the clubs continental profile
- chance for 'squad players' to become involved
- chance to develop and give some first team experience to promising youngsters (campbell)
- could help bring in 'better players'
- cheaper prices (£15 adults, £5 kids tonight) - gives those with less disposable income a chance to see their team.

i think the advantages far outweigh the negatives and would love to see us in this comp in the near future. maybe this season is one too soon? who knows, but certainly i would love us to be pushing for a place by the end of next season. never seen the lads in europe, me

just seen the mags are in pot 3 for the draw tomorrow. there are 12 groups of 4 teams.

best they can hope for is

Twente, copenhagen, nefki

worst

inter, bilboa, anzhi

or

a.madrid, napoli, anzhi

teams cant play teams from their own country at this stage. there are some canny sides in that draw, should be interesting. think it starts at 12

Wouldn't mind a couple of the bigger teams tbh. No point in qualifying if you've got to cross your fingers and hope to draw the shittest sides possible.

I'd rather play some good teams and see how it goes.

explains it all there. if i were you mate, something along the lines of

bordeaux, bruge, toon, academica(por)/aik stockholm would be ideal - some really nice cities, very good logistically and a very good chance of progressing. maybe swap inter for bordeaux for 'nostaligia' reasons

getting metalist/hapoel and anzhi would be a nitemare logistically and anzhi arnt a bad side so you may struggle to progress. there doesnt seem to be any awful trip in pot 1 so you will have atleas one 'nice' trip to a decent country

Just got to play the cards we're dealt and get on with it either way.

We'll have play a shite sight better than than we did tonight though. f***ing dreadful stuff.

Newcastle may have been playing nobody famous, and could/should have been at least taken to extra time but am I jealous? Hell yes.

They get on national (free) telly, with partizan commentators. The fans get a cheap game. Because of their lopsided ground, it looked full from most angles and the game was so tight I bet it was a good atmosphere.

IMO Peter Reid's biggest mistake was not going into the intertoto cup, and any Sunderland fan that thinks not being in Europe at all is better than the Europa is deluding themselves. I would have loved that to have been us on the telly (although I would have been at the ground), and would have been proud as punch even if we struggled like they did. If we qualify for the Europa next year I would be over the moon.

Nah.

Had the feeling of a pre-season game tbh.

f***ing hell, are Bridge Lad, oldknees and super Ally still pretending to be Sunderland fans or is it the same person?
Oh and by the way, I would love to be in the cup, but your defence of them is cringeworthy in the extreme. Bridge Lads stupid comments and his avatar make it so f***ing obvious.
"experience for promising youngsters", and I don't know one Sunderland fan who calls them "toon", fuck off man
