Newcastle talking to vieira

I imagine Vieira is an excellent coach; he knows the game inside out, he's a winner and speaks very eloquently. However, that doesn't mean he'll be able to man-manage big egos, identify good enough players or motivate the team. It would be an interesting appointment, but 'holding talks' does not mean he is going to be their next manager. It's also important to realise that its a pretty steep learning curve - with Keane we had to gamble, there was nothing to lose in that we were heading to League 1 before he came.

our position meant we couldn't afford to take a risk. We appointed a loose cannon who was totally unpredictable and he was lauded as a potential saviour.

Eh? We had to take a risk, we took a risk and we got promoted. We've been in the top flight ever since. Straight away he boosted the profile of the club which attracted the many, many signings who gained promotion - many of whom had played with him previously and played a massive part in getting us promoted. The likes of Kavanagh, Connolly, Yorke, Millar, Wallace and Varga were signed on the basis that he knew them and they wanted to work with him. Is Vieira going to be able to do the same?

Not really marra. Keano was a masterstroke by Quinn in the situation we were in. If Viera's first job is with the black n whites and working for Ashley then god help him .

Surely you're judging Keane's appointment with hindsight though? Keane and Quinn hated each other so the thought of them working together was/is no worse than Ashley and Patrick Vieira. With hindsight, it clearly worked and it was a masterstroke in the end.

Luke Edwards rattling on about how the story is based on the shortening of bookmaker's odds and nothing else because SSN always just report things based on what the bookmakers are telling them.

Recruitment will be solely down to chatty dad, Vieira I would imagine would purely be a coach.

I don't think there would be a middle ground on this one, either a master stroke or an unmitigated disaster, the latter I suspect.

Not a Geordie, not a famous number 9, never stood on the Gallowgate, never punched a horse or organized a boycoutt or a funeral.
Viera oot
he probably has never been on the metro or had the best pies in the north east... he wont last a minute

One of those that could go either way. Typical Ashley appointment, though more glamorous than previous attempts.

I'd prefer him here to Allardyce, McClaren and co.......but there'd be part of me terrified about the worst case scenario.

Hmm. I'm not sure. It's been suggested that Vieira is going to be a future City manager. I was hoping Ashley would go and fuck things up again but for me Vieira seems an interesting choice considering his previous appointments have been Kinnear, Shearer, Keegan, Pardew and Carver.
"Future City Manager" haway mate ! I'm not having a go at them but it's a massive risk and if Ashley doesn't change its not gonna be pleasent. As much of a risk as our link with Clement and I'd happily take Allardyce over him personally

Ideally I wouldn't have Allardyce here, but I genuinely don't understand how anyone would prefer a completely unproven manager over someone who'd as good as guarantee a comfortable mid table finish. Realistically, without being taken over, mid table is the best we're going to get.

I hate the "football" Allardyce plays so much that for me it's not worth it. You are completely writing off the chance (small as it is) of having an exceptional season, or seeing great football. I don't want to watch that garbage every week, even if it puts some points on the board.

Even this season as soon as they were safe playing attacking decent football he reverted to his old ways and their form was terrible.

I also don't think he or Pullis (who I loathe as much) is an absolute guarantee of survival in the way some on here seem to claim. They have both taken clubs to the very brink of relegation before being peddled.
