Probably the latter as their shape went to shit when he came on last night.

It did. Diame, as shite as he is, offers protection. Mind, that approach means they are goosed once they concede.

Couldn't get in the starting 11 due to free transfer Ki.

Suppose he retains possession rather than looking to hit fifty yarders at every opportunity.

From what I saw last night Shelvey just isn't a team player and only wants to show off, no tacking back or putting in meaningful tackles.

He's supposed to have specialist treatment for his 'anger issues' yet came on and raked his studs down a players leg.

As Father Jack said the teamwork went to pieces as soon as he came on.

Agree with all that. Although he was their only hope of getting back into it. His pass to get Perez in was excellent.

He's a lazy liability, always has been. Just strolls round the pitch half arsed. They can't afford to carry players like him in a relegation dogfight

Very true. They're so one dimensional, its laughable with a "World Class Manager" there.

To me he's always been decent at being hard to beat rather than offering anything in an attacking sense. He didn't need to play through the lines at Liverpool as he had Gerrard playing long balls from deep positions for Torres to run onto. Strangely that isn't as effective with Shelvey and Condom.

Can't disagree, it was a great pass .... fortunately Perez is as weak as piss but, for some reason, Benitez rates him.

Shelvey put in more wasteful passes than good ones though and he shoots when he has no chance of scoring.

Newcastle are in bother imo and I said, a while back, that they'd be bottom 3 at the end of their January fixtures.

In the modern game that's how it seems to be. More accepted on the continent, the Director of Football model and the manager just picks the team and tactics from what he's given.
In this country we still haven't really caught up with that.
I remember Newcastle signed 4 players during McClaren's January window. Townsend, Shelvey, Seydou Doumbia on loan and Henri Saivet. I'm guessing two of them were not his choice.
Similarly in 2014 we signed a lad on loan for £2m from Shaktar called Facundo Ferreya. Never made a single appearance. Keeping agents sweet imo.
Been smashing them in for Shaktar and now signed for Benfica. Odd you couldn't get anything from him our Doumbia.
