No surprise there as he's lethal at championship level. Got 23 in 32 games for Newcastle in the promotion season. But only 5 in 35 last season. In Gayle's 4 seasons that he's played in the premier league he's scored 7, 5, 3 and 6 goals.
In 3 seasons in the championship he's scored 13, 23 and currently on 13.

That would have him on course to be your second highest scorer this season. More than half way through the season and your leading "world class" scorer this one is gonna be lucky to hit double figures. That suggests that creating chances is a bit of a problem too.

IMO Rondon is a better player than Gayle......my question would be are muto and Joselu who Benítez brought in better than Gayle and or Mitrovic

Gayle got 5 in 32 last year, Joselu got 4 in 30. I think Gayle offers more than Joselu, but they are different style of players. West Brom wanted Gayle as part of the Rondon deal, but I reckon he'd have been playing regularly had he stayed.
Mitrovic looks better now than he did at any time during his time at Newcastle. He seems to have his head screwed on since he went to Fulham as well.
Muto, no idea not seen enough of him to judge. He's made 12 appeances, but started only 5, and is averaging 38 minutes per game.

Absolutely.
Attacking intent is sacrificed to try and keep it tight.
Need a bit more attacking impetus rather than always avoiding defeat first. Not even a shot on target at home to the bottom team is disgraceful.
Was a game earlier in the season at home, think it was Leicester, and our only shot on target was a Shelvey effort from 70 yards.
Playing with the handbrake on all the time, when in truth we don't look so bad when we actually open up.

Fair points.

I’ve not seen much of you lot this season but on paper some of the sales/purchases looked strange I thought that at least Gayle gave a plan B with different options but can also see why West Brom wanted him as part of the deal.

Guess any manager lives and dies by his transfer dealings

I'm not sure that the managers at Newcastle over the last 10 years have been making all the final decisions on recruitment to be judged fairly on their transfer dealings. That goes for Kinnear, McClaren and Pardew as well mind, not just sticking up for Benitez here.

Aye, given the recent comments from Chelsea as well around pulisic it doesn’t seem a stretch to say not many do.

In the modern game that's how it seems to be. More accepted on the continent, the Director of Football model and the manager just picks the team and tactics from what he's given.
In this country we still haven't really caught up with that.
I remember Newcastle signed 4 players during McClaren's January window. Townsend, Shelvey, Seydou Doumbia on loan and Henri Saivet. I'm guessing two of them were not his choice.
Similarly in 2014 we signed a lad on loan for £2m from Shaktar called Facundo Ferreya. Never made a single appearance. Keeping agents sweet imo.

Not trying to be argumentative but that's a complete myth. When was the last time a team fell from supposed safety and went down?

Norwich dropped the season we stayed up when we beat Chelsea etc and they were looking out of it for a time. Watford almost went down with us 2 year ago after losing their last 7 or 8 games and had been flying first half of the season. Hull stands out the season Bullard did that celebration taking piss out of manager when they had a strong start to the season and it dropped off. Off the top of my head. The mags were 8 points clear only a week ago.

Not being argumentive but there’s no such thing as supposed safety. You are either safe are you aren’t.

Look at all our ‘miracle seasons’. We looked down every time and got out of it. Just takes a bit of form for a low side to finish above others.

I can only think of Birmingham who were mid table and won the league cup and ended up going down on 39 points.
Usually the teams that go down are round the foot of the table early on and stay there

Blackpool in the same season started well but think they started falling rapidly by about November

It's a bit strange how so many of our fans are obsessed about the mags obsession with Rafa. I honestly couldn't care less if they hero worship him.

Edit: Birmingham had 30 points after 25 games. P25 W6 D12 L7.
In their final 13 games they won 2 drew 3 and lost 8.
Quite a plummet.

Is he cheap? We will have him
Will we make a profit on him? We will take him.

That's the only transfer policy we have had for 10 years

i love this argument. as if its that simple. X player is worth £1million now, but this time next year we will be able to sell him for £2million. lets buy him just for the profit. thats not how football or business works. what the fuck market forces are at play to allow a players value to increase by simply signing for newcastle, even if they are utter shite? if it was that simple then every club in the world football would just 'buy players to make a profit on'. it would be a great business for a potential entrepreneur.

fact is, a few years ago, your scouting came across a few gems (well done to them, actually doing their job) Cabaye, Wijnaldum, Sissoko, and they inevitably moved onto bigger and better things - that happens at every club

Manchester United players in awe of banner. Nothing to do with the fact they're facing the goal they're attacking. No sir.

@worflags: Know what I love about this photo? Almost every single Manchester player is looking at our banner. All 50m of it. That's the famous Geordies for you that lads. #nufc #united Wor Flags on Twitter

They're absolutely mental.

In defence people always claim its just a handful of idiots that do all these stupid things.

If it is they must work shifts.

The key to the mags staying up will be team spirit.

If they or any of their fellow strugglers lose it they're doomed.

Look at the new manager bounce for ourselves in the seasons where we dug ourselves out.

Look at Huddersfield this season - if they don't change their coach they're down.

Benitez has thus far managed to maintain team spirit but it doesn't take much for it to start to ebb away.

That said, a couple of shrewd window signings should see them safe (sniggers!)
