So let me get this right. We're all arguing over something that happened in the early seventies and generally insuating that things have not changed with the skunks. Grow up and act your age.

The whole if society was ignorant back then. The BBC allowed Alf Garnet to say nig nogs all the time and the whole country laughed their socks off.

I bet you would try and start a fight in an empty room. Someone nick your ice cream today?

No we aren't you berk. Read the f***ing article before you start being all high and mighty eh?

This thread is embarrassing to be honest.....both clubs have had their fair share of wankers, trying to prove one is better or worse than the other is pointless and boring.

I don't know what to say m8, you were there and I was there, it did actually happen quite regular.

in the late 70's I would have been 12 or 13 and went to all the home games. There were loads of racist chants and I wouldn't join in as I knew then that it was wrong. I've also seen NF at Roker and also Combat 18.
I also always thought the mags were worse but I'm not sure what the point if this thread is.

Another reason why we're classier than them. That, my friends, is the one thing you can give you say about us - the club/supporters don't embarass themselves a tenth as much as the Mags. We will always be morally superior at least, regardless about the fortunes of the clubs.

:roll::-D

Well there's two ways to look at it 1) Both mags and mackems are saying both clubs were as bad as each other, and 2) A small group of mackems are claiming NUFC were much worse.

Any idea why some SAFC fans may want to portay NUFC fans in this way ? It's unfortunatly sweeping this board at the minute.

No, what is unfortunately sweeping this board at the moment is a load of mags who are completely and utterly obsessed with Sunderland.

I'm ready for the 'best place to get newcastle news' , ' first 100 posts are mag related etc etc

That New Years's day has gone down in infamy Leonard.......not the finest hour for your lot.

I agree mate, I was there, but at 12 years old I can't honestly remember, what I've read/heard is a disgrace.

I was just making the point that we both have idiots so why argue about something that can never be proven

First thing to say is racism was prevalent at newcastle in the early 80s.
Secondly Bobby Barnes got the worst I have ever seen. The whole ground were giving him it.
Thirdly the atmosphere on NYD 1985 started well but once Gayle & Bennett got sent off it may as well have been a KKK rally.

A sad era which thankfully is over. No point in anyone trying to score points that our racists were worse.

ALL RACISTS ARE SCUM!

I'm going to defend Bristow on this one. Growing up of course I heard sickening racism on the terraces at Roker, however it simply didn't compare to what was going on at SJP. Theres plenty of hooligan books that refer to Newcastles hardcore elements desire to compete with clubs such as Leeds on NF issues (infact letters were regularly sent from Newcastle 'fans' gloating about their racism in the NF Bulldog magazine).

Obviously its wrong to tar all mags with same brush as the majority were probably disgusted at the racism, but a highly vocal minority turned SJP into an extremely racist environment.

Its a good job Daren Bent didnt sign for the toon, in case his mam got racially abused...............

Started going 1980.

Remember likes of Brian Stein, Vince Hilaire and in particular Dave Bennett of Man City getting loads of grief. Surely no coincidence that all were having good games for the opposition at the time.

This was the same era as Ricardo villa got a load of abuse after the Falklands war - such abuse was par for the course

Was not at Newcastle in 85 so can't comment on how much worse it was there than at RP.

Someone mentioned Tony Cunningham playing for Newcastle at RP in '85 on Easter Monday - they signed him after our 1-3 game up there on New Year's day, hence him not playing for them that day.

NUFC fans displayed far worse racist behaviour than SAFC in that period of time. There was never anything at Roker that came close to 1985 or the Bobby Barnes incidents. I would say though that its not that their fans were more racist people just simply that for a period of time SAFC had a number of black players playing for them while NUFC didnt. Perhaps it was simply that we didnt have a home derby match with all white players with NUFC having black players in their ranks?

Anyone though who compares the likes of giving monkey noises to Bryan Small / Crooks / Hilaire in terms of scale with what happened on 1st January 1985 really hasnt got a clue what they are talking about or more to the point simply werent there to experience it.

And here he is on his specialist subject.........

"There were 30,000 people in the ground, joining in the monkey chants"

how i remember it. hateful.

i was there.

mr grebby was from forest hall by the way not wallsend.
