Newcastle away New Years Day 1985

The racism aspect is worse in retrospect as it was pretty much par for the course then. I don't remember many SAFC fans complaining too much about the racism after the game. I missed the other nastiness of it as I went straight to the game from the local.

Not at Roker it wasn't. That day remains the worst racism I have ever witnessed.

NUFC fans displayed far worse racist behaviour than SAFC in that period of time. There was never anything at Roker that came close to 1985 or the Bobby Barnes incidents. I would say though that its not that their fans were more racist people just simply that for a period of time SAFC had a number of black players playing for them while NUFC didnt. Perhaps it was simply that we didnt have a home derby match with all white players with NUFC having black players in their ranks?

Anyone though who compares the likes of giving monkey noises to Bryan Small / Crooks / Hilaire in terms of scale with what happened on 1st January 1985 really hasnt got a clue what they are talking about or more to the point simply werent there to experience it.
That's a good point.

I was there. Undoubtedly the worst case of prolonged racist abuse I have ever heard at a football match. Not by a few either. Yes we did have our fair share of racist "songs" at Roker in the late 70's early 80's but nothing compared to NYD 85.

PS Wests goal and Turners penalty save were the highlights of the match.

Ive posted this on the Howard Gayle thread but thought it deserved its own thread. Gayle and Benno were both sent off and younger fans may be interested in what went on that day (see the link)

I was there and the Scum surpassed themselves on that day they were an absolute disgrace to the human race. Benno & Howie I felt for you both then and reading this it all comes back to me.

And for any f***ing SKUNKS reading this click on this link YOU BASTARDS

So let me get this right. We're all arguing over something that happened in the early seventies and generally insuating that things have not changed with the skunks. Grow up and act your age.

The whole if society was ignorant back then. The BBC allowed Alf Garnet to say nig nogs all the time and the whole country laughed their socks off.

I bet you would try and start a fight in an empty room. Someone nick your ice cream today?

No they are not. Not one has said that Roker was ever worse than Sid James park that day. Stop making things up.

Making things up ? You were saying how any racism in the Fulwell was an issolated bellend but mackem after mackem has called you on it.

Link for that then? I had a season ticket in the Fulwell end. There was the occasional shout from a bellend but fuck all like NYD 1985.
And as for your " You are a bigot" shit, get fucked. I am telling the truthas uncomfortable as it is for you. Nothing we have ever done is as bad as what they did....notice "As bad" is underlined.

Well said dog lad....

And I will fight to the death that it was a tiny minority.
Have you ever witnessed racism at our place as bad as NYD85?

No, but then I've only been to your place half a dozen or so times and at that time there wasn't much racism towards white players.

Tony Cunningham played for the Mags back then, I remember he played up front for them in the game at Roker Park

The most overt racism I've heard watching a Sunderland match was in a pub and not at the match.
When in the past "town full of pakis" chant has been started in the north west and yorksire it's been 15 year old als bus riding bairns who have had a sniff of a barmans and that's it, thankfully not seen it progress to the anything more than that.
Didn't go to roker in the "good old bad days" of the 80's so cant comment on that.

Previously on Newcastle v Sunderland ... This fixture has produced some memorable moments down the years: Howard Gayle and particularly Gary Bennett losing it after incessant racist abuse in 1985;

Not according to some on here.

I assume by people who didn't go at that time...In the early 80's you would get the odd monkey and he's a wog a wog chants but it was NEVER a big thing at Sunderland. Much much less than the mags.

And as for the f***ing spanner who was suggesting that mass racist chanting was going on at Roker in the early to mid 90's.....
