They will be back.
It is as black-cat says, when the server gets too busy like it is at the moment, they get disabled to prevent the site getting even slower.
The standard vbulletin searches (even the optimised version we use) struggle with a large site such as this with the 3.5 million posts currently in the database and we are no longer on the multi-server solution we used to be due to costs.
