New champions league format

I didn't know this 'til recently but the clubs wanting the ESL weren't planning on leaving their domestic leagues - just forming an alternative to the CL. Dunno how far it would've got if it wasn't for fan backlash mind.

Additionally, I think PL2 (youth leagues) also play their games following a similar system with the top 16 qualifying for the next stage.
The fans backlash wasn't to the ESL itself or its format, it was to certain teams getting automatic qualification in perpetuity, irrespective of how they are performing in the domestic league, which opened the possibility of those teams ignoring the domestic leagues and playing understrength teams in it

I only know because of Footy Manager 😂 but:

36 teams in 1 big group
Each team plays 4 home and 4 away
Top 8 go through to final 16
Next 16 play each other
Winning 8 progress to last 16
Losing 8 drop to Europa
Bottom 8 go out altogether
How are they choosing who plays who? Could we see Man City v real in the 1st league? Or is it more likely to be Man City v cork ?

36 teams are seeded into 9 pots. Each team plays one team from every other pot. As Real and Man City are likely to be first seeds they won't play each other. If I've read it correctly.

If you are a relative minnow with a small squad, you’d sack off the first 10 league games that you play, and just focus on the two-legged play off game that everyone finishing 9th and below will be subject to.

No?

Some of those league games are going to be completely meaningless.
