New champions league format

All the teams are in 1 league table but they can only play 1 team from each pot - Top (6?) qualify next 8 go into a playoff rounds then it's the same format from the knockouts.

Basically they've added more games with the playoff rounds.

Europa and Conference doing same format also.

Basically using this season's results using next year's format table would of looked like

1. Man City
2. Real Madrid
3. Bayern
4. Atletico Madrid
5. Arsenal
6. Barcelona
7. Porto
8. Real Sociedad
9. RB Leipzig
10. Inter

I don't think FC Copenhagen would of made playoffs although they qualified for Ro16 in this year's format.

The constant expansion of European cup competitions is effectively creating a form of European super league, just without the participants having to give up (in the case of the premier league teams), their lucrative domestic league competitions.

Next year - ‘oh we simply must reduce the number of domestic games by reducing the Premier League to 18 teams’ because the players are getting injured. They’ve tried it before and they’ll try it again.

I only know because of Footy Manager 😂 but:

36 teams in 1 big group
Each team plays 4 home and 4 away
Top 8 go through to final 16
Next 16 play each other
Winning 8 progress to last 16
Losing 8 drop to Europa
Bottom 8 go out altogether

I didn't know this 'til recently but the clubs wanting the ESL weren't planning on leaving their domestic leagues - just forming an alternative to the CL. Dunno how far it would've got if it wasn't for fan backlash mind.

Additionally, I think PL2 (youth leagues) also play their games following a similar system with the top 16 qualifying for the next stage.

Oh yeah, they wanted to have their cake and eat it!

(Which necessarily involves massive disruption and fewer opportunities for the domestic game …. Which will be subservient to the ‘prestige’ competition).

I’d much, much prefer the biggest 4-5 clubs (and the one funded by an oil state that murders critical journalists) to just disappear completely into their own super league.
