Neil Oliver

one is a talented songwriter and accomplished singer, and the other is Ian Brown. (and that's from a stone roses fan)
I knew they were both probably dicks in real life (brown with his court cases proved that), it’s just a shame when they open their mouths and confirm it… I like neil olivers books but grifting for gb news is such a shame.

I bump into him regularly in Edinburgh and Stirling where he lives and is always happy to chat and comes across as a decent bloke tbf. Didn't watch the clip so not sure what it's about if someone could give a quick description that would be good

I remember this article he wrote I quite enjoyed it NEIL OLIVER says politicians are 'tenants' of this Union of nations
He's not an 'official' historian but he has played a very important role in getting people interested in history especially UK history. Maybe the real historian should get involved in the production of his shows to ensure accuracy (maybe they already do).
They do get historians involved, he's not flying solo. My mate from the National Trust has been on a few.

Problem is, much like with a lot of modern content which purports to be about "what's really happened/happening" if you put actual academics alongside people making sweeping generalisations and conjecture, it gives the entire thing a quality of truth or rigour which it only has in parts.

Thing is when I was at uni thst wasn't so much of an issue because the briadstrokes of society favoured, if not the truth, then at least healthy skepticism all round. Now in a culture where people are weaponising history to justify not wearing masks in a pandemic etc it's a real problem to have history programmes just pander to people's biasses and ideals.

Love his old shows. Coast was superb. But always imagined him as the know all prick at a dinner party.

Obviously needed an income stream and no doubt GBN paying him fairly well. Doubt what he says is too far from his personal beliefs though - perhaps just hammed up a little for viewing figures.

Not even gonna ask what specialist degree has actual specialist Scottish history professors

I'd forgotten he existed but I used to like him

Dunno what controversial thing he's said like..can't be arsed

If you study for a history degree in Scotland the first year of the course has compulsory Scottish history modules, so there’s that.

It wouldn’t be unusual to have academics who have a special interest in periods of history like the Jacobites either, all over the world.

The majority of men at his age tend to either be incredibly convicted of what they believe or very cautious in what they assert, in my experience. A lot of men act as though any social opportunity is actually their own vehicle to tell you how much they know about whatever they like. Its actually one of the reasons I get on here, to spout shite where it dosen't matter, get it out my system

Thing is its one thing blithely opining at a dinner party with mates, where the context allows you to be challenged or ignored.

Going onto GB news though where there's a flock of people just waiting for their biaseses to be confirmed or, if anything, presented as not taking things *seriously enough*. An unfounded opinion becomes gospel.

More like they quite rightly won't employ a conspiracy theorist far right nutcase again

A lot of these gb news heroes are basically people who have lost their jobs and instead of looking at themselves , it’s always somebody else’s fault

That includes mogg, dorries etc etc etc and especially Lawrence fox who since Lewis ended and he split with billie piper has descended into a self pity depression and just lashes out on any thing for a reaction.

Some people choose to join them into that self same pit which eventually they will realise, they are doing it to empty the pockets of those they claim to speak for
