Need to bin off 3rd place qualifying.

Group position is shite due the format as well.

If we win the group we'll likely get Portugal or Germany, if we finish 2nd we will probably get Sweden.

I know there's an anomaly with France not being seeded for the draw, but 2nd place shouldn't play another 2nd place.
There's two 2nd v 2nd fixtures in the round of 16. 2A v 2B and 2D v 2E. Groups A and D got the hardest draw for the top placed teams with them playing the 2nd placed teams of groups C and F respectively, rather than a third placed team. Worse for our group due to the strength in Group F!

Game One: Team A v Team D
Game Two: Team B v Team C
Game Three: Winner G1 v Winner G2 (winner qualifies for knockout round)
Game Four: Loser G1 v Loser G2 (loser eliminated)
Game Five: Loser G3 v Winner G4* (winner qualifies for knockout round, loser eliminated)

*from another group to avoid fixture duplication

2 wins and you qualify for the knockout round
2 defeats and you are eliminated
Thereafter straight knockout
do they have extra time/penalties in all matches then?

Worra about 36 teams?
6 groups of 6, top 5 qualify plus best 2 sixth places. Perhaps even Scotland would get into round 2. Perhaps...
Or 66 teams with 11 groups of 6, top 5 qualify plus best 9 best 6th places. Surely they would get to round 2 then? Surely...

I don't like the fact we have qualified after two average performances and are literally better off drawing or even losing our last game.
16 to 8 was the best format, as it made the Euros a different beast to the world cup where literally every team that entered could win.
Now it is becoming a mini WC.

Still love it though.

The Aussie Rules system?

Need to bin off 24 teams qualifying. Back to 16. 4 groups of 4. Top 2 from each group.

Winner of A plays Runner up of B
Winner of B plays Runner up of A

And the same for C and D.

A draw on tuesday will do nicely. Let the Czechs deals with Portugal, France or Germany.

It's encouraging games like last night where both teams aren't bothered about winning and more concerned about not losing. You can forgive it during the knockout before a goal is scored but during the group stage it just makes it an absolute bore fest, we are a quarter of way through and have so far had one slightly enjoyable game.

Didn't Portugal win in 5 years ago by only winning 1 game in 90 mins. It was an easy tournament to forget and so far this one is exactly the same.

Bring back the top two qualify or make the whole tournament a knockout.

you are a numpty, that Portugal victory was absolutely brilliant

It's a shite format that overly complicates the path to the final and allows shit teams in to dilute the quality of what's meant to be the finals tournament.

Having 16 teams qualify from 24 is a farce, it's literally harder not to qualify for the next round.

The group stage in the new format is just more qualifying games. Real Euros begins now, 16 best teams in Europe in a straight knockout format, tasty
