National Holiday

Hello All,

Me and the current partner are on our way to Glasgow /Edinburgh for a weekend away on the National Holiday coach.Evening meal, breakfast,We get to stay in the Erskine Hotel and I’d assume it’s Glasgow today and Edinburgh tomorrow.

£59 each,Cant get vexed for that like.

Updates to follow.
"Vexed". Now there`s a word you don`t hear much these days.

My ma used to live outside Aix-en-Provence near Marseille. This is before the days of budget airlines, so I used to regularly travel by Eurolines every school/college holiday - return trip for about £80 (Late 90's). National Express from Sunderland into London Victoria, then Eurolines bus down to Marseille - total travel time 1 day 16hrs. How the fuck I endured 3 and a half days bus travel for a week in France I'll never know. Never, ever again.
You get in the mindset when you are younger. Did Darwin to Alice Springs 23 hours. The Alice Springs to Adelaide another 25 hours. Wasn't that bad.

Why did you not use the train in France?

Cost - I was a teenager. Same reason I didn't use the train to London.

The bus ticket to Marseille included ferry etc, and iirc was roughly the same price as a return train ticket to London at the time. Besides, it's not like we had access to trainline/expedia etc in the late 90's. Getting across the channel and finding trains to the south of France would've been a massive chew on.

Makes sense. I did interrail a few times but you had to get to the continent first. I love European trains. Going to have a proper few interrail trips when I pack in work.

Ive been on a Dutch train - double decker and very quiet nice.

Been on a French train that must have been made in the 1800s nee air con, seats were really worn where Napoleon had sat - not so Good.

Been on a Belgian one too but can't recall much about it as we were sat next to two really loud Americans.

It used to sicken me seeing the bullet trains flying past while on the way to Dijon and Lyon.

I'm bored, I've just done a search on Eurolines. They don't operate from the UK or France anymore, but do from Germany and Eastern Europe. Through other operators, you can leave Park Lane at 6:45 on Wednesday morning arriving at Marseille at 23:20 on Thursday for £119.

No ta.

Cant remember the last time I saw a Eurolines bus - I think Flixbus bought them out

If I w3as skint and young and had someone down there to see i'd do it.

Might get Ryanair quite close for £15 mind.

The last time I was on a trip bus we were going to the lakes. We had a bottle of home made white wine in our bag in the over head shelf thing.

Long story short, the bottle fell out and hit the woman in front on the head.

Profuse apologies etc etc but it must have knacked and she spent the rest of the journey moaning about us. Completely justified but it did kinda put me off buses (and home made wine).
Absolutely none of this happened.

The thought of being in a hotel with the same people you’ve been on a coach with is horrendous. Sitting on the coach waiting for Margaret and Eddie because they forgot their glasses.
I never go on a bus excursion on any holiday. I’d rather get somewhere independently or not go.
It's for old people, they love that sort of thing. An hour feels like ten minutes for them.

Went on Belgian trains a few years back. Double deckers. Very smooth. The only thing is I couldn't tell the difference between 1st and 2nd class until I started getting dirty looks. I beat a hasty retreat. Think the upper floor was 1st and lower was for the oiks.

Oops I went on one from Brussels to Bruge. Upstairs but had normal ticket. No idea it was first and don't recall seeing any signs.
