I know several people on here visit Stanhope often. It's on the main road, about half way between the ford and Greenfoot holiday park. My Dad loved Weardale and they had a static van there for many years. It's a long slow climb back to the caravan site. He always used to stop about here and say "aaaaahs paggared! I wish there was a bench here!" Going to go back next spring and throw a load of bee and butterfly wild flower seeds around it. I still miss him so much especially on match days.

That's great Becs.
He was with you throughout his life, and he'll still be with you now, and always.
You'll maybe someday, completely out of the blue, smell a scent that was particular to your Dad, and he'll be beside you; though you won't see him, you'll probably sense him.
It'll be his way of letting you know, he's always near to you, and watching over you and your family. x

Lovely memorial for you to visit and remember your dad, are you going to get a plaque installed?

What a star x

We did the same for my Dad about 1/2 a mile from Waskerly Station on the Waskerly Way. He adored it up there.

We went to scatter his ashes up there and it was a lovely day down in the Tyne Valley, but by the time we got up there is was blizzard conditions. There was about 2 inches of snow and you could only see about 15 yards. We were not properly dressed for this, but thought it was now or never.

We fought our way down to his bench and opened the canister. Me mam was about to chuck a trowel full into the air when some hiker appeared out of the snow. He came very close to getting a face full. Any way once he went we all took turns it scattering me Dad across the countryside he loved so much and trudged back freezing and soaked to the skin. He’d have pissed himself at the day’s events and our stupidity in going out so under prepared.

I'm glad he would have liked that :)

We scattered my Dad in the river at Stanhope as he said he liked the idea of floating past his favourite places on the way out to sea. He wanted to go through Weardale, through Durham where he spent a lot of time as a child train spotting in Wharton Park, through Washington where he lived most of his adult life and the past the SOL of course. The breeze caught while we were scattering and poor Bob (my collie) ended up a bit dusty. He would have found that funny.

That's lovely and in a great spot your dad would be so proud of you and his bench.

Weardale is so beautiful and one of our favourite places, and Stanhope has the brilliant railway.

That's really nice. A nice place to go and sit for a while with your thoughts and memories.
