While all this all may be true, referring to a big black guy as a donkey seems pretty offensive to me. I understand it is a colloquial term passed along for ages but I think its a poor expression that shouldn't be used in this day and age and it makes the other SAFC look bad in my opinion.

It's not a term I would use, but you can't start telling people on the other side of the world what colloquialisms they can use. You always seem to me to be pretty level headed, but some of your stuff tonight is not right. Wise up the more the natives are told how to think the more they will pull in the other direction .
The Jozy stuff is not nice in my opinion, but to turn it into a racist agenda, which appears to be where his fan club is taking it is altogether wrong.

I don't know. It doesn't really happen much. You are right. The US is totally oversensitive about race. I personally think referring to players as animals crosses an imaginary line you shouldn't cross. it seems a pretty negative connotation regardless of skin color.

Slightly hypocritical, you call people jackassdon't you not?

That might be true, but I don't think it is right. Referring to players as animals is kinda ridiculous even if its meant as a joke or just a form of venting.

Referring to people or players as animals is NOT kinda ridiculous, mate. E.g. as strong as an Ox, as brave as a Lion, as slow as a Donkey, as scared as a chicken etc etc. Seems your just a bit sensitive.

You're really teeing yourself up like, friend...

Ya, I guess I am just digging a deeper hole. You are American. What do you think about the term? I think it would be pretty easy for a non-Sunderland fan who isn't familiar with English colloquial to misconstrue it as racist.

maybe easy to misconstrue.
but you also need to accept that it isn't.
and telling people that they should start considering it as racist doesn't help anyone. best just to put up your hands and say you were mistaken so we can get back to giving shit to the f***ing idiot of an OP

No it wouldn't. Please explain how you can view the term "Donkey" as race related. You can't because it isn't. In English (I.e. Our language) it infers, lumbering and unskilled - and Sunderland have had many donkeys of all pigmentations over the years. Accept you're wrong and move on FFS !!

Oh, and I think the OP is a total bell for starting yet another (yawn) anti Altidore thread, it doesn't help at all. But that's his prerogative, and do I think he's racist .......No chance. So drop it !!

Maybe, it's hypocritical. We call people all sorts of things, but I think most Americans are thinking of the body part instead of the animal. People use asshole alot more than jackass.

I am very familiar with it to be honest and it's really only derogatory based on level of play... but I have been following the Prem for many years...

Never think of it as racist and I live in the states now, went to uni here, and my old man is a yank. So I don't see it at all. It's mostly because he looks comical on the ball here. Let's be fair. I think it's a terrible fit for him but he has put in some bumbling of late. Hence, donkey.

I've just clicked on to why it could be construed as racist the other side of the Atlantic, and also why it wouldnt be seen as racist here, I think.
