Music Festivals in America

anyone ever been to one? any recommendations? planning a few weeks over there visiting friends next summer, gonna have a bit dodge about, but not going to have time or money to do a festival here so thinking of trying one out over there.

i've heard that they are 'over-organised' to death, that some places have drinking zones so you have to go there to have a drink and alcohol is banned in other areas, can't be that bad surely?

just want somewhere not too big, maybes a bit alternative, relaxed, where people might be having a smoke and that

What kind of stuff are you into?

I went to the Winter Music Conference in Miami in March a few years ago. I think it's called Miami Music Week now. House & Disco played in various venues all over South Beach & beyond. Boat parties/pool parties etc. Bloody amazing.

Went to the Warped tour in San Francisco in around 2004.

Had to show id to get into a caged off drinking area. Couldn't go watch bands with a beer. No decent beer either.

Not any particular genre, love old school hip hop but couldn't do a full festival.

I'm after something similar in size and style to Kendal Calling, gonna drive down from dakota to Florida in august so pretty restricted in time frame but I'm hoping to find a little one that fits the bill. Would have to have a camp site like.

This is the type of thing i will avoid. If it has a set up like that i just woulndt bother

I want to meet people, wierdos and hippies and arty farty types

That sounds awful tbh.

Isn’t that cos Warped mainly attracts the yoof though?

Lollapalooza 92 in Vancouver. Legendary lineup. I was stoned to fuck and tripping. I can't remember half of it now. I remember the Chilli Peppers in their underpants with what looked like symbols with fire coming out of it on their head.

Main Stage: Red Hot Chili Peppers, Ministry, Ice Cube, Soundgarden, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Pearl Jam, Lush.

Side Stage: Rage Against The Machine (Irvine Meadows) |TOOL (Waterloo Village, NJ) Jim Rose Circus Sideshow, Sharkbait, Archie Bell dancers, Nirvana, Porno for Pyros, Basehead, Cypress Hill, House of Pain, Sweaty Nipples, Arson Garden, Seaweed, Seam, Green Magnet School, Boo-Yaa T.R.I.B.E., The Look People, Stone Temple Pilots, The Vulgar Boatmen, Truly, Skrew, Tribe, The Authority, Samba Hell, Café Tacuba Groovement,Gary Heffern with Ivan Krall, Ice T & Body Count, Treponem Pal, Luscious Jackson, Shrunken Head, Sometime Sweet Susan, Temple of the Dog, Dahli Llama, Doo Rag, Billyclub Fest and Sweet Lizard Illtet.

The line ups always look great, even for the smaller ones. I'd struggle to cobble together one decent line up from all of our festivals put together in comparison

Did Coachella this year, it's a different world.
The organisation is unreal, so efficient. The site is so clean, they have flower beds round trees instead of rivers of piss.
Apart from our group, people didn't seem pissed, there are more keen on instagramming. As a result crowds are not as exuberant and at British festivals.
Great experience mind, we had a great time dispite enthusiastic Americans high fiving.

not sure if i'd like that. i prefer when the whole place is getting on the session in all manner of ways. never enjoyed being pissed around sober people. its the over-organisation that i'd like to avoid

aye that looks class

went to a "festival" in Chicago a couple years back whilst over there. They were flogging "weed" lollipops out the back of Scooby Doo's mystery machine. Think they were just weed flavoured like but they were advertised otherwise so the lads took the hit. Plenty green knocking about though. It took place on a patch of grass the size of your average village green with houses and that either side. Totally bizarre experience.

I'm aware this doesn't really answer yer question but there's always obscure things that can be discovered with a little bit of research.

*edit* also went to a food festival in some kind of Chicago Ghetto and tried fried alligator which was surprisingly nice! Being in a group of 8 all white males, I am amazed we navigated our way in and out without incident like. All part of the experience.

Vegas does an Electric Daisy Carnival if that’s your thing. No sleep and all day in the sun listening to that tripe.

Just checked, they’ve already had it last weekend

You missed out

aye i'm after something a bit off the beaten track like that, but it takes quite a bit of digging, as most google searches keep offering up the same batch of festivals. not sure how big camping music festivals are over there, but given the amount of summer festivals we have this country (variety of sizes, themes and genres) and using that proportion to the size of the UK, there must be 1000's in america.

Could you not do Austin City Limits, that's around that time of year isn't it.

That's supposed to be one of the best.

its in October this year.

theres a one close to Denver, in the Rocky Moutains that looks pretty small and casual called Arise which is the closest thing to fitting the bill for us at the moment

i'll start on the music forums and travel forums. always ask the SMB first though:cool:

are you looking at doing the full camping experience (camping etc) or just somewhere to visit for a day? One we were at was a day thing. Rocked up early afternoon and strolled off into the Chicago night after dark.
