The main criteria for me is soft springy long lasting soles with good support, as I have some foot problems.

Any recommendations?

Would running shoes be best ?

Trekking type shoes probably a bit too heavy.

Had a pair of brilliant Pumas many years ago, since when nothing else has come close.

Completely subjective unfortunately. If you've got foot problems it might be worth going to a specialist shop, or at least doing the 'wet foot' test to see what type suit you best.

Those fully air cushioned air max type always look well comfortable but I've never brought myself to shell out on them cos I fear they are a bit twattish.

what is acceptable trainer wear for the over 50s?

Nothing the matter with puma.

Adidas Iniki are really comfortable.

Go to Start Fitness. They're brilliant and will have a good look at your feet and recommend the best shoes for you.
