More Dead Shellfish Washed Up On Saltburn Beach

A consequence of dredging the Tees for its freeport status apparently.

Two independent reports due out soon.
surprised anything lives in the tees anyhow
You'd be surprised how much it's cleaned up. Bass are regular visitors in the tees now, and just on the back of the original story, there have been plenty of them caught in and around the tees despite the problems for other marine life.

Yep. Dredging has a massive impact on ecosystems. In some places it's absolutely necessary for industr but once it's a regular occurance you are not destroying mature environments.

The likes of the Pallion shipyard muppets think you can just run a dredger up the wear and all is good.

I don't profess to know enough about Teesport to know whether this destruction is worth it. But it's a worry that more freeports are coming. More sealife/riverlife to be wiped out.

The difference here to the normal impact of dredging is that more than almost anywhere else in the country what you're dredging up is full of horrendous deposits arising from decades of chemical industry on the Tees. Including pyridine, which is suspect number one in the mass die-offs. Unless you're Houchen, in which case look! A pony!

what a surprise
DEFRA want their arses kicking for their findings, no doubt put under pressure from the powers that be on Teesside.
Just been on ITV news, a healthy crab in Cornwall was found with 6mg of Pyredine, a dead crab found at Redcar had over 400mg.

The Scientist on that report was practically seething over it
Tbh I've also thought that the rivers not getting dredged were one of the causes of the amount of flooding we've seen in recent years, although admittedly I'm no expert.
