Mike Ashley on the high street

Totally missing the point.

Surely it is a good thing to have a high street full of coffee shops and vegan caffs for the students, so all of these things can be out of the way ?
Aye,its charity shops as well ,stopping proper shops being there

He does 400 million a year on line. Over a million quid a day. Hes suggesting he himself pays a premium tax on that huge amount ??
Clearly he is .With the tax in place businesses would slowly put emphasis on balancing the mix of where they do business to get under the threshold thus protecting real shops .Bold move but he's set up for life so can afford to have principles and make suggestions

So if he really wants to save the high street why are so many of his jumble sale style shops in out of town tin sheds. The blokes a hypocrite, as someone said in if for himself. If he buys or controls many more shops it would be the worst thing for high street.

Is that excluding the one on High Street West in Sunderland and the one on Northumberland Street in Newcastle?

Or the majority of his House of Fraser stores? Or the majority of Debenhams? Or the majority of Flannels?

Facts are not welcome around these parts. I suspect he is upset because the Metro Centre doesn't have one inside.

We have to accept the world of retail is changing, it's like the music industry in the early 2000s trying to stop downloads by taxing them. It's just holding back the flood for a little bit.

What they should do is accept the fact and raise the value of the high street market place as a novelty by reducing costs and giving tax incentives; and if it was really serious, nationalising vulnerable locations for large conglomerate stores in which brands can rent space to sell physical goods, provide subsidised space for reduced rents, or provide space for short term 'flash' shops.

Wtf you on about? Plenty reasons the high street is dying. Too many out of town sheds being built, internet giants who dont pay tax, rates and mike ashley buying buying up all competition. He wants his cake and to eat it the fat fk.

There’s virtually no need for the high street these days, especially in places like Sunderland where it is absolutely shite. Give it another ten years when the last of the non internet users die off and it’s finished. Flatten the shops, build houses and use the rest of the space for bars/restaurants/leisure facilities that still have a place.

Couldn’t agree more.

Why do we want to save the high st anyway?

It’s an outdated way of shopping.
