Might have to get rid of the MG

I bought the TF a month before the wife said she was pregnant. At the time I bought it as a runaround to get me to work and back, and a little fun on a weekend. We've got another car that's good for a family.

Keep it then and use it just for fun, same as a bloke having a motorbike and not putting a baby on the back.

The MX-5's dynamics, handling and performance are all better than the MG's. The MX-5's front engined, rear wheel drive sytem provides way better handling than you get in the MG, oh and it's a Mazda and will keep going and going. Apart from the MG being British (which is rarely a good thing apart from in supercars) it has nothing which is remotely close to being as good as the MX-5

The MX-5 is a good car, I agree. But I only had a budget of a couple of grand, and that would of got me a much older MX-5

I've always been a fan of MG's

I would, the only problem is that we look after the wifes gran, so when one of us needs to take her someone, we take the big car, but once we have a baby it'll be a case of one of us will have the baby, the other will have her gran, and we'll not get her gran out of a car as low as the MG

To an extent I think we would be able to manage, it would just be like having one car, but the wife thinks we'll need both cars to be able to transport a baby, and apparently in the boot isn't an option

That's fair enough. I just get a little baffled by car purchases sometimes when they are (most likely) the 2nd most expensive purchase a person will make

When's the baby due, you might still get the summer out of it anyway?

It's not due until nov/dec, but I'm concerned that if I see after the summer I won't get as much for it as the prices reduce.

I have one as a weekend car and no chance would I ever think that it is a car that you can have for everyday use, I told you this when you said you were getting it.

Depends what type of 2 seater surely?

Unless your talking tvr/lotus etc..

So far so good.

The brake discs on the front must have been worn, but I changed the discs and pads at the weekend and all is well again.

I replaced the accelerator cable because it was a bit stiff.

Changed the alternator belt the other week.

As for the head gasket, I think I've got a good one here. I've had the car almost 2 month and so far no drop in water or oil. When I first got it, I changed the air filter, oil and spark plugs, but I noticed some oil in the spark plugs, turned out it was the cam cover gasket, so I changed that, but because I had that off I could see in the top of the engine, and there was absolutely no sign of head gasket failure at oil, i.e. no sign of that creamy stuff anywhere.

I'd consider getting rid of the TF for a ZT, but I'm concerned that I won't be lucky and and get a second MG with no head gasket issues.

We drove to scarborough yesterday with the roof down, and I've got a cracking red forehead mind...but it was a great experience.

Wow! Well there's the difference with the MX-5. I had one for seven years... I changed the tyres... That's it.. Not even a bulb in that time. :).

Yeh, I'm finding the MG perfectly fine for everyday use. It gets me to work and back, and to meetings, I can nip to the shops and then have a bit of fun when the suns out.

I don't see how it's not suitable as an everyday car. It's not a family car, granted, but I wasn't expecting the wife being pregnant a month after I bought it.

That's true, it'll sell better now, but you won't get the enjoyment out of it in Summer, which is why you bought it in the first place? I suppose it depends on how much you stand to lose.

Sell it in August, that way people will still be daft enough to forget it's nearly winter.

In fairness they were all easy fixes and didn't cost much. The cam cover gasket cost £10, the accelerator cable cost £15, the alternator belt cost £6. the most expensive bit were the brakes, £100 for the discs and pads, but the faulty brakes were likely down to a previous owner running the brakes too low before changing and damaging the discs.

How have you found the TF ned? Any pitfalls. Any probs with the head gasket?

I had a TF for 2 years and had no mechanical problems with it at all. Seems I may have been one of the lucky ones though.

I ended up getting rid after the terrible winter(not the one just gone but the one before) when, being RWD, it rendered the car completely useless.

Great little drive mind, and its 0 - 60 performance is very good (I had the 136bhp version).

The TF gives you that element of danger thouh, you never know when its going to lose its grip on the road.:lol:

P.S. Performance, in terms of top speed and 0-60, is almost identical... in fact the 160bhp version of the TF pisses all over any MX5 like.
