Canny article in todays paper, apparently there's a growing middle class backlash against Positive Discrimination towards working class kids for places at Oxbridge and the other quality universities.
......but don't underestimate power of the political backlash, the sense of betrayal among middle class voters when more and more of their children are rejected despite having tip-top grades.

...........and the oddest thing is the role reversal of the political parties, Labours wave of immigration was great for the middle class employers of nannies, plumbers and decorators, but dismal for the unskilled and semi skilled Labour who found themselves out of work or having to work for less. If they had a family to support they often could not manage on the lower wages on which a single Pole could subsist.
It's a funny old world when political detoxification has come to this.

POLITICAL CORRECTNESS EH!, you never know when it's your arse that's going to be f***ing bitten.

The Tories are cutting their own throats by going after the money in the pockets of the middle classes.

Where's the incentive to be anything other than a scrounger these days?

Traditional Tory voters are now going through the same thing traditional Labour voters went through in the mid-ninetees.

Blair knew old Labour would support him despite reform because they had no one else.

Cameron knows traditional Tories will stick with him because there's no one else.

That's more or less what it boils down to, both sides have been shit on by their respective parties. I side with the middle class on this I hate positive discrimination in any shape or form. The best candidate should always be selected.

Shame the middle class didn't support us on the immigration problem.

middles classes are absoloutley fine with positive discrimination. well, until it effects them...

The middle class sometimes take any slight as being positive discrimination though, and there's nothing worse than the whining sense of entitlement that you hear sometimes.

Every year brings a story of some kid with four thousand As at A Level, and the whiny parent complaining that they didn't get into medical school and that it must be positive discrimination because the med school's admitted some thick kid from a comp with one GSCE in Eastenders Studies. Never see the other side, which could well be that their precious lamb interviewed really, really badly, and the medical school prefer an applicant with equally good academic ability - or near enough - and other important qualities, than an arrogant borderline-autistic spectrum hothouse flower who thinks they deserve a place for just turning up.

Unlucky that, now they know how working class kids and ethnic minorities feel all the time....Oh and despite the "positive" discrimination they are still massively over represented at the top establishments so if I were them I would shut the fuck up and enjoy the fact they continue to have their arses kissed and dont have to compete on a fair playing field with the rest of us. If the system becomes truly fair there will be a lot more places going to working class and ethnic minority kids :evil:

Don't think positive discrimination should really be used. Should be best candidate secures place. But the best candidate might possiblly be the working class kid at a sink school with BBC rather Miss Prim from the private school with straight A's though.

Thats the problem though isnt it. Positive discrimination is required because the establishments cannot be trusted not to discriminate against working class kids or ethnic minorities.

Surely if a kid from a shit background manages to get top grades despite overcoming massive disadvantages and going to wanksville comp rather than private school this kid should be given the opportunity to goto Oxbridge.:?:

A thread about political correctness from TLR, mate so glad you've decided to engage us on something different for a change.

OBVIOUSLY I'M BEING SARCASTIC.

Would deserve it on merit surely?

Read my post again I said a BBC from a child who went to sink school is possibly a better candidate than Miss Prim with her straight A's. This isn't positive discrimination it would still be the best candidate securing the place. All I am saying is look beyond the grades. On occasion the Miss Prim will still be the right candidate to secure the place, on others it will be Miss SinkSchool with lower grades.

He made a good point.People only start taking notice when it starts affecting them or their family
