Looking at taking the wife somewhere special for our anniversary meal, but some of the prices are astronomical. For example, the Raby Hunt starts at £220 each, and then £125 each for wine on top. That’s £690 for a dinner. Surely there is no culinary experience on earth worth that amount of money? A meringue?

Has anyone on here done any of these, and are they worth it? We could go abroad and get a fantastic meal somewhere in Europe for the price.

Have done quite a few, sometimes for work but have paid myself as well. You’re right, it’s eye watering but as an experience it’s great.

You don’t have to do the wine pairing of course, just buy a bottle and that takes off a decent chunk

Isn't there a pub down at castle Eden that is owned by a Michelin star chef and does decent food?

Have you tried looking at Lunch? It’s always cheaper.

aye soon as it has a michelin star your looking at that amount. however you can get tasting menus of just the same standard elsewhere. Peace and Loaf in Newcaslte is class. also, the folks that took over D'aqua seem to be doing a high quality tasting menu.

or go off-piste and go to the city bistro at the new college and get the chefs table inside the kitchen and have them cook the entire 7 courses in front of you, its really good standard food and costs relative pennies

Good shout, booked peace and loaf as heard good things and it’s a fraction of the price ...

Done a couple, have a look at The Bay Horse in Hurworth, its very good. Most memorable was at the walkie talkie building in London that was unreal. Off to Marcus@The Berkeley and Elystan Street in a few weeks really looking forward to those. Also there is a huge amount of work involved with tasting menus but as an experience can't recommend one enough for a special occasion or even if you just fancy a blowout.

Went to Peace and Loaf last week (probably our fourth or fifth visit) and it was disappointing. Way off the standard we’d had there previously.

There’s a new restaurant in Ponteland called Eleven and that was fantastic when we went a few weeks back - £55 for their five course tasting menu and pretty good wine list - would definitely recommend.

Used to go to the Araki when it had 3 Michelin stars.

They have 1 menu only - Sushi "Omakase" Chef's Set Menu and was £310 per person

Was incredible and worth every penny.

Shame the head chef moved and they lost their stars.

slightly off topic but we went to Spent Grain in sunderland on the thursday night and it was really top notch. just really liked everything about the place, the staff, the atmos and the food especially. really good quality all over. not sure there is anywhere like it in the town. praying it doesnt go the same as so many others in the town. i'm going to make an effort to try and go once a month at least
