Air Crash Investigation nailed it. The investigators from Amsterdam who were brought as neutral but were disrupted constantly, smuggled a few bits of debris out as well as the main body of the craft (or what was left of it).
From the damage and the route the aircraft was flying, they could identify from what direction the missile hit the plane and the type of missile from the damage it caused.
They found that the missile was fired from territory occupied by Ukranian -Russian separatists, and the missile itself was made by a Russian manufacturer.

Apparently the driver of the r-tic that transported the BUK launcher has been in jail since 2017. Pity the report got the flight direction wrong.
