The messi to France being easy scenario is hilarious. France have had more clubs win the title in the last 1p years than any other top European league.

Yet ronaldo goes to juve after they've won about 8 in a row and he is lauded:lol::lol: laughable. He's also took them backwards.

Messi unquestionably is world class but I don’t go in for the whole GOAT thing. I personally preferred Ronaldo. It’s a shame he never took the opportunity to play in a really competitive league. Germany, England or even Italy. He’s basically ended his career by revealing everything he ever said about never playing for anyone else other that Barca or Newell Old Boys as a complete lie and followed the money. Ronaldo could have done the same but he chose a league that would look better on his cv after he retired. Messi’s achievements have basically now ended because no one cares what you achieve with a French team.
When Ronaldo left Real Madrid for Juventus, they had won 7 titles in a row and 4 doubles in the last four years. They were winning the league with ease. There was little interest in the league and attendances were down.

More teams in the German league are evenly matched than in France.
But its not competitive no? Becuase realistically the only team able to afford messi is bayern so its not like hed be playing for augsburg is it?

The bundesliga is a one team leagie and thats a fact

It's a shite move to a shite club funded by a state playing championship manager.

It's absolutely everything that we all hate about football, it's not even free market economics it's state interference paying a way above market value that they have no hope of recouping.
Who should he be going to?

4 top teams within 6 points. Uncompetitive shite apparently though. Should have gone to Bayern to really test himself

Germany is competitive compared to France when messi signs PSG will have over a billion pounds worth of players the next most expensive team has about £300m and pretty much every remaining team has less than £50m worth. The SPL is more competitive than France.
In the last 10 years Montpellier, Lille (2) and Monaco have won Ligue 1. It was a 4 horse race this season.

Doesn’t count if he wins the champions league this year? Has a far better chance than if he had went to any Italian side.

Not to convince other people mate, to convince himself. At the end of the day the primary emotion for going into sport isn’t to be rich, it is to be the best. Once you give up on wanting to be the best because you frame your own abilities players then focus on being rich.

It will keep Messi up at night to know that he didn’t achieve what he came in touching distance of doing. And it isn’t as if Maradona was from the other side of the world and Football is a second tier sport in Argentina. He will see reminders every day.
How will playing for a lesser team convince himself? He either believes he is the best or he doesn't, it cannot be quantified. He will point to his numerous Balon d'Ors and individual awards and records and the vast amount of trophies he has won. He has now won silverware with Argentina which was the last honour that alluded him and genuinely did seem to haunt him. If he was so money-driven I'm sure he could have gone to China or America but it appears as though his drive is to win the Champions League again. I doubt Maradona comparisons keep him up at night, whereas him and Ronaldo seem to drive each other on.

Winners all huff when it doesn't go their way, Ronaldo, Fergie, Klopp, name who you want. Already covered the greed point a million times here also.

Hes an exceptional footballer and you're a football fan, its been unbelievable to watch he and Ronaldo drive eachother on to break record after record for 15 years.

We have been incredibly lucky to watch Ronaldo and Messi, I'm old enough to have seen their whole careers, from breaking into the first teams of their clubs to becoming the top 2 of all time (in my opinion). One of the all time greatest sporting rivalries, its a shame the end of messis barca career has come about due to money. His contract is so big and unnecessarily unaffordable because he has been threatening to leave every summer unless they pay him more. Now its so outrageous that even with a 50% pay cut its unaffordable. This is why the Barca and Real presidents were so adamant that the super league was necessary

I'm not intending to be rude or insulting when I say this, but this thread has shown up how many football fans show such little interest in the game outside of England. Some of the opinions and arguments I've seen put forward are absolutely baffling.

I'm assuming its a case of putting forward an opinion of a mate or family member, or something you saw posted on Facebook, as opposed to taking an interest yourself and keeping up to date with what is happening in other leagues.

I thought I'd do some number crunching and looked at squad market value (source Transfermkt) and looked at the Herfindhal-Hirschman measure of market concentration (based on squad value) - essentially sum up market values, find the share for each club, square them and sum them. In a 20 team league with everyone having the same value squad the HHI would be 125, in an 18 league 154.3 and a 12 team league (SPL) 347.2. The higher the HHI the more market value is concentrated and not shared. Here are the results:

HHISquad MVTeams
Ligue 11096.9€ 3,601.6320
La Liga1018.2€ 4,933.2820
Bundesliga996.2€ 4,261.5118
EPL713.2€ 8,877.0020
SPL2377.5€ 278.3512

So EPL is least concentrated in terms of squad value and the SPL the most. Not much difference between Ligue 1 and La Liga.

See that makes a lot of sense. With Barca its still a case whereby the numerous other players they've signed for huge money on massive wages who just haven't been or aren't value for the outlay. Messi has been worth every penny, he is their best player ever.

Both Barca and RM are deep in the same shit hence the Super League, RM can't be too far behind Barca when they're flogging out as much a week on Bale to play golf. An ageing squad that needs regeneration too. Never a better opportunity for the likes of Atletico, Sevilla, Villarreal, Sociedad et al to cash in domestically.

The bad news for us is league one is very competitive when measured like this!

It's not just his contract that means they can't sign him. Even without his contract they need to shed an absolute fortune before La Liga will let them register anyone, and that included Messi himself. Messi's 50% pay cut was the maximum he could take under Spanish law.

There' literally nothing Messi could've done. He cost Barca 9% of their revenue but Laporta reckons he generated 30% of their income.... so bit of a catch 22 they could do nothing about.

I just still cant get my head around why he wouldnt play for free like.

He cant love the club that much. Fake tears.

Messi is the greatest of all time. He’s everything at club level. He’s earned the right to decide where he wants to end his career. Frightening there’s people on here questioning the money involved

I don't give a monkeys how much he's paid, how much he has in the bank or if he is or is not a 'greedy bastard'

He should have come to England, and tried to win another title in a top league....

You can bang on all you like about the only club that made an offer were PSG, but it's only been a few days since he found out he was leaving Barca, hasn't given other clubs a chance to get money and packages together, for some clubs who might have had a chance to sign him it may have taken some time to put together....

Brilliant footballer, one of the best ever, just a shame he's went to a poorer league than ours....
Do you think he gives a fuck about winning the Premier League? Do you think he even gives a shite about winning Ligue 1?

The bloke's won 10 league titles, 4 Champions Leagues, 6 Ballon D'Ors, the European Golden Boot in 6 different seasons. Why the fuck would he sit there and think 'aye, good career and all, but tbf I've not played Crystal Palace, Norwich and Brentford yet'?

I imagine the only thing on his mind is more European Cups, more Ballon D'Ors and a World Cup win with Argentina
