Win the world cup on 2022 and he may become the GOAT? Being 34, playing in France is great preparation for the WC. Playing in the Prem isn't.

Maradona: 1 x WC, 1 x Argentina title, 0 x La Liga, 2 x Series A, 1 x UEFA cup, 259 goals in 491 club games and 34 in 91 international games (albeit with little protection from the ref)

Messi: 1 x WC (RU), 1 x Copa, 10 x La Liga, 4 x CL, 474 in 520 club games and 76 in 151 international games.
Argentina aren’t winning the World Cup regardless

Some utter shite on here  you would think he had gone to the Chinese league or to Inter Miami the way some are going on, not the champions league semi-finalists. So fuck if he is wanting the most money possible, him and Ronaldo should be demanding that. He has been playing at the highest possible level for 15+ years, playing against the best English teams every year pretty much. How much more does he need to test himself? Would back to back away games against Burnley and Crystal Palace somehow prove he is/was a better player?
It's a shite move to a shite club funded by a state playing championship manager.

It's absolutely everything that we all hate about football, it's not even free market economics it's state interference paying a way above market value that they have no hope of recouping.

potentially aye, win the World Cup in 22 and pull home a few European titles for PSG and there is a debate to be had. However, in assessing a players attributes Messi just doesn’t have what it takes to be that leader on the pitch like Maradona was, and any World Cup win he would be the most powerful piston as opposed to the entire engine as we saw in 86.

Not ruling it out, but mental attributes are largely invisible so much harder to pull justification up for. the PSG move is a symptom of that weak mentality, in the same way Altidore blazing wide against Cardif was a symptom of his weak finishing.

Don’t want to join others by shitting on messi mind, I adore him as a footballer, in 2006 I got laughed at in the pub for saying he could be the best of all time, would love to be right for pure selfish reasons ha.

I can understand the move (money and his marras are there) but for the neutral it's a shite move. Would have loved him in the PL or even at Atletico Madrid.

Aren't Man City funded by the UAE? Aren't Chelsea funded by a Russian oligarch?

All these clubs showed their true colours with the Super League. Funnily enough PSG turned it down.

Looks like he’s arriving in Paris this afternoon. 72500 people watching a private jet between Barcelona and Paris on Flightradar 24… normal figures hover around the 1000 mark.

Messi unquestionably is world class but I don’t go in for the whole GOAT thing. I personally preferred Ronaldo. It’s a shame he never took the opportunity to play in a really competitive league. Germany, England or even Italy. He’s basically ended his career by revealing everything he ever said about never playing for anyone else other that Barca or Newell Old Boys as a complete lie and followed the money. Ronaldo could have done the same but he chose a league that would look better on his cv after he retired. Messi’s achievements have basically now ended because no one cares what you achieve with a French team.

LV-IRQ on flight radar if anyone as sad as me :)

Being the best player on the planet doesn't prevent him from being an arrogant greedy moody little baby. Someone can be outstanding at their job and still be human with flaws. How is it irrational to dislike him? I've formed an opinion based on how I've seen him behave off (and occasionally on) the football pitch. If you think someone having a different opinion to you is irrational, you shouldn't be on the Internet, there are much wilder and more irrational opinions all over forums and social media

Winners all huff when it doesn't go their way, Ronaldo, Fergie, Klopp, name who you want. Already covered the greed point a million times here also.

Hes an exceptional footballer and you're a football fan, its been unbelievable to watch he and Ronaldo drive eachother on to break record after record for 15 years.

So he needs to win the world cup and a few european titles before being considered in the debate 😳🤣

Good god hes right up against it isnt he?

Second best player to ever grace the earth but people trying to convince themselves that he ever had a personality were sadly wrong. What a depressing yet inevitable move. Never really cared if he stayed at Barca or not, that would have just been a waste, but he could for the first time in his career attempt to stick his head out of his comfort zone and create something by himself, for himself.

Instead his legacy is this, and that is something he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

He could have been the greatest of all time, instead he will have to live out his days in the shadow of Maradona, reminded every day that no matter how good he was, he was never enough.

fool.

You are taking the puss but this is exactly what the best player of all time did. And in order to become that, exactly what the next challenger must do.
Whether he's the best player ever or not is irrelevant really though. Nobody will ever agree on it and it's extremely difficult to compare players from different eras. It's a pub discussion and that's all. The idea that the best/second best current player in the world should sign for a lesser club and take a lower wage whilst still at the top of their game just to convince some people that he's better than another player 40 years ago is bizarre. Especially when we all know nobody is ever going to change their view anyway.

Ohhh cause hed definitely sign for someone like spurs wouldnt he?
Man Utd, Chelsea etc....

You're being a bit blinkered here like, he's an exceptional footballer, I just think there are better leagues he could have went to if he'd waited for other options, you don't believe that the French league is better than the English, German or Italian leagues....

Germany is competitive compared to France when messi signs PSG will have over a billion pounds worth of players the next most expensive team has about £300m and pretty much every remaining team has less than £50m worth. The SPL is more competitive than France.

Lille won the league last year.

The last time someone won the bundesliga other than bayern was about 75 year ago. In being sarcastic before you point it out but you get my point.

Rangers won the league by 25 points. Youre making stuff up here

Leicester won the premier league doesn’t mean it’s not Man City’s to loose every year.

Not to convince other people mate, to convince himself. At the end of the day the primary emotion for going into sport isn’t to be rich, it is to be the best. Once you give up on wanting to be the best because you frame your own abilities players then focus on being rich.

It will keep Messi up at night to know that he didn’t achieve what he came in touching distance of doing. And it isn’t as if Maradona was from the other side of the world and Football is a second tier sport in Argentina. He will see reminders every day.

So what was your point about germany then? I must have misunderstood
