Just like Grealish did. He should have stayed at Villa. He said he loves them and it's his boyhood club.

Remind how much of a pay cut Ronaldo took to sign for Juventus in a one team league?

What about Bale sitting on his arse collecting €600k a week?

How much were we paying Defoe? Did he take less money to move here from Toronto?

Why is it only Messi getting this treatment?
Aye, great point, bale hasn't had any bad press.

He’s won everything in a country in two horse race
If it's a 2 horse race how come there has been 3 different winners in the last 10 years? How come Spanish clubs have dominated European club competition for the 20 years? Alaves were the last Spanish club to lose a final to a non-Spanish team and that was in 2000.

Some utter shite on here  you would think he had gone to the Chinese league or to Inter Miami the way some are going on, not the champions league semi-finalists. So fuck if he is wanting the most money possible, him and Ronaldo should be demanding that. He has been playing at the highest possible level for 15+ years, playing against the best English teams every year pretty much. How much more does he need to test himself? Would back to back away games against Burnley and Crystal Palace somehow prove he is/was a better player?

I thought he had more about him than chasing the money. That was my point anyway. And it seems I was wrong.

For the best part it’s been a 2 horse race

People were defending him on here. It was Zidane's fault. He only got bad press when did the same at Spurs.

Did Ronaldo take a pay cut to move to Juventus? No and why should he?

Did Defoe take a pay cut to move here? No and he was worth his wage.

Why should Messi cut his wages by more than 50%?

Serie a, la liga and the Premier League are all much stronger leagues than lique one.

It's really disappointing to see him ending his career there.
He's done La Liga mate

Seria A - they're all similarly bankrupt as well so nee way anyone there would offer him a deal

Prem - aye he could have but if no-one got in touch with his agent what's he meant to do?

He wants the Champions League again, PSG give him a chance of that. It's also not a bad move in the run up to what will be his last World Cup.

I'm not sure he's bothered about proving himself to anyone.

How are any leagues ever meant to develop if the top players never leave for them clubs? PSG are one of the top 5 teams in Europe, they are favourites for the champions league this year. Apart from Man City, Bayern and maybe Chelsea he could not have joined a better team.

 Whey pity for them.

It just seems a bit mad to criticise Messi for going to PSG for the money, when the only reason the Premier League is a "stronger league" is because of money. Players aren't coming to England to test themselves in a strong league, they're coming for money.

In this instance, Messi is probably going for both the money and a really really good chance to win the Champions League again.

Neymar/Mbappe/Messi is a good front three.

Find it really bizarre the way he triggers people so much on here.

Hate the Ronaldo comparisons but I'm going to do it anyway - why does Ronaldo not get the same criticism for tax evasion? Does Ronaldo not dive and cheat? Has Ronaldo ever done it in a 'shit team' to prove himself? He went from the biggest/most dominant club in England to the biggest club in the world, then to Juventus who had won the league 7 years in a row at a time when Serie A had been at its weakest for years and years.

And fair play to him, but it's bizarre double standards.

Would have loved to have seen Messi in the Prem for the record, disappointed he's gone to PSG.

Is he? I've never met him.

Hes one of the best footballers on the planet and is paid accordingly. Barca aren't in financial difficulty for paying Lionel Messi, they're in the shit for spending £100m plus and £300k+ a week wages on players who haven't delivered the goods who they wouldn't be able to recoup that financial outlay on and are either unwilling to take a pay cut themselves or accept a transfer.

Greed? He agreed a 50% wage cut to stay on, the league rules then prevented him signing it (and Spanish law from agreeing to a further cut) because some of the other incredibly well paid players weren't willing to cut their wage/accept a transfer to help the club. Umtiti was booed at a pre season friendly for this.

Were NOB even in for him? It seemed the only realistic move was PSG, because despite being 34 hes still at the peak of his game (just like Ronaldo...) and still wants to mix it in the CL. I'd imagine he'll have had offers from China, the middle east or the MLS, but like Ronaldo hes a winner who still has plenty to offer in Europe.

Its a complete irrational dislike, I find it surreal.

Being the best player on the planet doesn't prevent him from being an arrogant greedy moody little baby. Someone can be outstanding at their job and still be human with flaws. How is it irrational to dislike him? I've formed an opinion based on how I've seen him behave off (and occasionally on) the football pitch. If you think someone having a different opinion to you is irrational, you shouldn't be on the Internet, there are much wilder and more irrational opinions all over forums and social media

Hmmmm not 100% convinced that's true. Players are well paid, but I think you need to give them more credit than they sometimes get.

In footballing terms, it would have been good to see Messi in a more competitive league than the French one. That said, I'm sure you're right that it's the Champions League that all involved are really looking at. That's what PSG have been chasing for years now. They're about as bothered about Ligue 1 as we and the rest of the world are. If he goes there and wins it then you've gotta say fair play. Not sure he will though.

Putting the Champions League aside, going to Ligue 1 is a massive step down for him. Just as it was for Neymar, Ramos etc. At least he, like Ramos is on the wind down. I actually think it's more of a shame that a young lad like Donnarumma has gone there when really he should be making a step up. But then again, if he wins the CL, who can blame him.

Second best player to ever grace the earth but people trying to convince themselves that he ever had a personality were sadly wrong. What a depressing yet inevitable move. Never really cared if he stayed at Barca or not, that would have just been a waste, but he could for the first time in his career attempt to stick his head out of his comfort zone and create something by himself, for himself.

Instead his legacy is this, and that is something he will have to live with for the rest of his life.

He could have been the greatest of all time, instead he will have to live out his days in the shadow of Maradona, reminded every day that no matter how good he was, he was never enough.

fool.
Got to question why Ronaldo went to Real Madrid and Juventus. If he really wanted to test himself he’d sign for Eibar and Cagliari.

And fancy Grealish going to Man City instead of Norwich.

Greedy bastards
You are taking the puss but this is exactly what the best player of all time did. And in order to become that, exactly what the next challenger must do.

Win the world cup on 2022 and he may become the GOAT? Being 34, playing in France is great preparation for the WC. Playing in the Prem isn't.

Maradona: 1 x WC, 1 x Argentina title, 0 x La Liga, 2 x Series A, 1 x UEFA cup, 259 goals in 491 club games and 34 in 91 international games (albeit with little protection from the ref)

Messi: 1 x WC (RU), 1 x Copa, 10 x La Liga, 4 x CL, 474 in 520 club games and 76 in 151 international games.

Can't wait to see Messi and Sergio Ramos lining up together, match made in heaven. One absolute class player, possibly the best ever in his position and some little guy who scores goals
