Messi vs Best

The thing is the likes of Best and Bobby Charlton were fantastic athletes they would have flourished now.
I saw these players in the flesh and although for me Messi is the best i've ever seen I think it's quite frightening to think what Best in particular could have done if born into the modern age.
There's a little bit of ignorance being shown by some on here regarding latter day players particularly some of the comments regarding defenders.
They're being portayed as simpletons who just dove in and were pulling a horse and cart.
I actually think individually defenders were genarally better then, today defending is much more the whole team thing, there's quite a few individual deficencies which can be covered up in that framework.
Totally agree. I saw Best and Charlton in the flesh and they were players who would have been absolute giants now, particularly Best.

Attackers in the modern era are greatly favoured by referees, able to go over on a whim to elect a foul. Players are encouraged to dive and feign injury, knowing they will be given due attention.

The point about defending is a sound one. Coaches find it easier now with all the tools at their disposal to organise defences to nullify players. There is a greater emphasis on all players doing their share of defending.

Messi in the 60s would have been swamped. He's benefited massively by being nursed by Barca(the hormone treatment one aspect) and given a solid stage with the time and support to dominate it.

Grow Best in Barca - Mega superstar

Grow Messi in Manchester - Another kid who didn't make it

 The greatest player of our generation wouldnt have made it in England? Quite literally heard it all now.

Messi is clearly better.
Both were great players who played very similar styles but Messi is simply sensational.
Messi is better all round player and scores a lot more goals than best.
Messi is more professional and a better athlete.
As both played in great teams its easy to see that Messi is superior just by looking at how many goals he scores and just the brilliance of his play.

Messi isn't a better all found player.

The growth hormone would only have speeded up his development, he would have always got to this height/weight, he'd have just developed later that's all.

In your opinion.

Bollocks, he's a suped-up dwarf man.

By his team-mates as he netted his 15th double hat-trick in a row ;)

Aye, because being small in england means you're not very good

Hes better than best and will probably go down as the greatest player ever by time hes finished.

Can some of these old timers tell me how many full 90 minutes games they seen Best play in please?

Over the past 5 year I guess someone could have watched Messi at least 250 times live with his every move covered by 10 different cameras,, everything good and bad thing he does annalisyed over and over again. The olden day football never had to put up with that sort of scrutiny thus you only tend to remember the good bits or the compilations knocked up on youtube

And for the poster who said Messi would not have hacked it in Manchester in the 60's. Its bordering on madness to suggest that imo

Tuesday night in Stoke territory.

Messi would have been brilliant in the 60s, the only thing that would be from taking a player from the present back to the 60s is the fact they would be fouled more often but Messi is always getting kicked in every game he plays in so this would not be a problem.
