Messi is one hell of a player ... I'm too young to have seen maradona play so can't really compare

and on the Messi not single handedly winning the world cup.... ha way even maradonna couldn't do that with Colo the clown and Guttierez in the team

Not really. He scored most of his goals in a poor league.

A poor league that formed the basis of a national team that won the world cup 3 times in his era.

And that of a player who spent some of his off seasons not resting, but going to play another league in another country?

Yes fitness levels are better now, but that doesn't mean players from a past era wouldn't have adapted.

Pele wins it for me. Technique and vision was decades ahead of his time.

Maradona by a mile.

Yes, the game's not as quick but that's evened out by the more physical nature 25 years ago. Remember, Maradona's left ankle was practically frozen in place from about age 24 after a bad injury, and he could still play the way he did.

When Messi's taken an average Argentina team to the World Cup and an average team to a league title then we can talk.

Firstly both players are considerably shorter than normal for professional footballers.

For Messi one of the things in his favour is the protection players receive from referees in the modern game, as it has meant he has been relatively injury so far in his career. On the international scene Messi has played very well for his country without ever excelling. Argentina have some very good players, but there isn't a team in the world that can match the Barcelona machine in full flow.

With Maradona during his time at Barcelona he was targeted by the "hard men" of Spanish football and he had his leg broken by Andoni Goikoetxea who was also known as "The Butcher of Bilbao". He was the best player in world football during his time at Napoli, and only his addiction to cocaine stopped him from reaching even greater heights. His solo goal against England in 1986 will go down as possibly the greatest ever goal in World Cup history, and his mark on the international game will stay forever.

In my opinion, Maradona was a better player than Messi, as he managed to excel in a time when he was targeted by defenders and he could do almost unbelievable things on the ball. Pele can fuck right off

Wasnt even the best goal in that game .:lol:

George Best would have wiped the floor with them. IMHO of course.

That we're having this argument when one of the two concerned is not even half way through his career tells you all you need to know.

Messi is definitely in the top 3 already. In eight years, can anyone honestly say they don't think he'll be regarded as the best ever?

Mind you, even if he won two world cups the nostalgia lovers would still win - 'but Argentina have a good team these days - so you see, Maradona must be better.'

Messi is topper but Maradona won the World Cup on his own IMO like.

Who would I rather have in my team = Messi

I love Cruyff the best though after Barry Siddall

Havent looked through the thread so don't know if its been posted but all the those who are serious need to look at the Maradona lob goals video on Youtube and remember that the current football saturation lends itself to a biaised opinion. The record of Maradonas ability (and for that matter Peles) is lost in time.

Messi is amazing. Maradona was a genius. He had Messi's ability married with Bests vision and individuality.

Maradona gets my vote.

Indeed.

And everyone focuses on Messi's lack of a World Cup, but happily ignores Maradona's lack of a European Cup.

In 1986 Argentina beat Bulgaria, England, Belgium and West Germany.

That's four wins, only one top quality opponent and a couple of decent ones, and one of those aided by a handball that would have been spotted 99 times out of 100.

To say someone is the greatest player of all time based on that, and argue that no one else can be considered better than him until they have done the same is extremely weak.

The logic doesn't translate either. If the World Cup is the ultimate test and Argentina only won it because Maradona single handedly won it for them, then how come the same player couldn't manage the same in the European Cup? Surely he should've been able to single handedly win that for Napoli at least once. How come he never won it once in his career, didn't manage to win the other three World Cups he played in and only won three league titles in his 20 year playing career?

None of that means Maradona wasn't a great player, it just means to say no one can better him based on wins against Bulgaria, England, Belgium and West Germany is a little odd.

And of course, despite the much repeated line, he didn't single handedly win the World Cup anyway, he played in a team of 11 men. And it's not possible for a player to win the big trophies on his own, because if it was the invincible Maradona would have a pile of European Cups and league titles.

Just hope messi doesn't turn into a coke snorting riddled gun toting fat bastard ;)

Maradona's glory days if you ask me

He was much better box office as he was
1) a arrogant bastard (which made him a better leader than Messi)
2) an utter lunatic
3) a drug addict
4) who loves guns

Maradona was a better player. End of.

No contest.

Messi for football

Maradonna for singing.

Draw in acting

Maradona was the best player in the world in every team he played in. Argentina, Spain, Italy, national competition - it didn't matter. I watched him in friendlies for random teams being the best player in the world. He had the arrogance and leadership skills to be the man.

Messi only does it for one team. He is utterly superb for that one team but take him out that team and he isn't the best player in the world. Why? Because he's not as good as Maradona.

Tough call but at the moment Messi would win the poll.

That is untill Marradonna releases any new stuff.

Marradonnas popularity runs to none footballing nations.
