Men’s fragrances - cologne/aftershave

Le labo was more or less a closed shop a few years ago but I’ve seen it in Heathrow duty free so obviously going mainstream .

Given that you’ve posted that, I’m assuming you’d recommend them :D

What’s size do you normally get? I’ve only ever used spray, but noticed there’s a smaller roll on.

Get the cheapest one first, then if you're happy go for larger size. Even the 6ml rolers will last you an age.

Yeah definitely recommend them, they're mostly excellent and for the price you just can't knock it. Allows you to have a great variety of stuff.

If you don't want the usual premium stuff and like the idea of something that's a little more uncommon and a bit special then I really recommend Eight & Bob eau de toilette

It was originally made by Albert Forquer, a famous perfumer. Copy and paste job but the very far fetched and marketing story behind it is here....

Albert Fouquet, the son of a Parisian aristocrat, was part of the elite French society in the early twentieth century and a perfume connoisseur. In a room on the upper floor of the family chateau, Fouquet created and perfected various essences for his own personal use aided by Philippe, the family butler. At social events he would surprise everyone with an exquisite fragrance that became increasingly in demand within the exclusive social circle he frequented. However, Fouquet continually rejected proposals to market his fragrance.

One night during his summer vacation in 1937 on the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur), Albert met and got on very well with a young American student who was touring France in a convertible: John F. K. Within minutes of being introduced, JFK was captivated by the essence that Albert wore. John's charm and congeniality persuaded Albert to leave him a sample of his cologne with a note at the hotel the following morning:

On returning from his vacation, Albert received a letter from John in the U.S. thanking him for the kind gesture and informing him of the success his perfume was enjoying among his friends. He requested Albert send to him eight samples, and if your production allows, another one for Bob. Without fully understanding the request, Albert decided to send a box with sufficient samples to offset the transport costs.

His perfectionism extended not only to the fragrance but everything surrounding it. He didn't fill the order until Philippe found some beautiful glass bottles in a Parisian pharmacy that Albert considered suitable for his fragrance. Finally, he ordered several boxes decorated with the same pattern as the shirt that JFK was wearing when they met, and then labeled the bottles and boxes with John's amusing request: Eight & Bob.

Albert was surprised a few months later when he began receiving letters from America with requests from various Hollywood directors, producers, and actors such as Cary Grant and James Stewart.

Everyone wanted the Eight & Bob fragrance they had apparently discovered through John's father, who had maintained relationships with well-known stars because of his previous business ventures in the movie industry. Unfortunately, the success of his cologne would not spread much further. In the spring of 1939, Albert died in an automobile accident near Biarritz (France). Philippe, the only person who could handle the orders, would only continue with the work for a few months, since the start of World War II forced him to leave his job with the Fouquet family. In the final shipments, Philippe hid the bottles inside books that he carefully cut by hand to prevent the Nazis from seizing the fragrance.

Decades later, the formula for Eight & Bob has been completely recovered, along with its carefully crafted production process. Once again, it has become one of the most exclusive fragrances, preferred by the worlds most elegant men.

In January 1934 Albert Fouquet traveled to Chile at the invitation of the Italian ambassador. Besides enjoying the charms of the country, he took advantage of this trip to search the Andes for aromatic plants that would enhance his fragrances.

He returned to Paris with several sprigs of "Andrea", the name Albert had given the plant whose extracts are the soul of his fragrance Eight & Bob. Andrea is a wild plant in short supply due to the altitude and limited area in which it grows; and can only be picked during the months of December and January. The plants gathered undergo a very exacting selection process in which only seven percent are chosen. This process ends between March and April and only then is it known how many units of "Eight & Bob" can be bottled; and how many can be allotted to each country.

I have no clue why the Nazis would want to seize aftershave, however it is a very very nice fragrance. Lasts a long time and smells great.

Another shout would be Acqua di Parma sandalo. Anything with sandalwood i particularly like.

Safari by Ralph Lauren and Polo by Ralph Lauren in green bottle were another two I had regular.

Handed the latter to my son the other week, he can take the reigns.
Mind the fecker went to a 12th birthday covered in my creed ffs! Only allow mesel 3 sprays!

I've got tobacco oud by Tom Ford for special occasions, it's an absolute beast but only really good in cool weather, its really heavy. Wouldnt recommend blind buying any Tom Ford private blends apart from tuscan leather and tobacco vanille which are popular. As someone mentioned though you always smell them on people. Ombre leather is a good one as well, it's not one of the private blends like so not premium premium, good for work in the winter

My go to summer one is prada l'homme l'eau which is ridiculously nice and not that expensive. It smells a bit like womens perfume if you test it on paper and it's first impression is that it's quite plain and citrussy but it's really high quality iris, all natural ingredients and lasts all day which is odd for such a light smelling fragrance. When it settles on your skin its absolutely lush and smells nothing like it's opening and much more deep and smooth compared to the original l'homme, I always get told I smell good when I wear that. It gets better in the heat as well, smells like expensive soap

Don't bother with Creed aventus, boring as owt and everyone wears "really good" fakes that "smell just like it". If you wear it out you will get lots of men (not women) commenting on how lush you smell and they will have a story about their mate who gets it for 25 quid a bottle and you can't tell the difference (you can)

Any recommendations for a premium purchase?

I have always bought in the relatively standard priced market however I’m interested in getting an expensive option for special occasions.

Looking at the likes of Creed, Tom Ford, etc. What are people’s recommendations? I particularly like Creed Green Irish Tweed.

got some creed jardin d’amalfi for Christmas and it’s lovely.
