Dunne played 60 games for Everton before he went to Man City....
Couldn't remember that

Don't think it's anthring to write home about getting someone from the Everton set up they have prob had similar success as us producing players and they have alot more history and pull to get the players there in the first place

One of the best current English midfielders came through Sunderland's Academy.

We can't be doing that bad surely.

My mates grandson has been told he is gifted and talented by the academy. .we might have to wait a fes years for him to come through. ..he is only 5years old. But yhen maybe not if we put some of the Sunderland ladies and some young kids in the first team we may be onto a winner.

If we're not counting Leadbitter because of the date the academy was built then we cannot count Rooney or Osman either. We can, however, had James Vaughan to the list.

Correct but they started off in the Everton Academy.
If they got sold before they played a first team game then it's hardly evidence of a good set up!

Im a sport scientist and have worked there with Ged, Elliott and other academy staff. Ged is a very knowledgable coach and personally I like him very much and we get on really well. Elliot again is a great guy and coach. However that doesn't mean there aren't wrong things. Football is its own 'world' and is rife with 'who you know' just look at first team staff changes. Ged and Elliott do bring in players, ppl who they want, football allows that to happen! They also can be brusque with those not in favour and 'rule the roost' a bit. again I think the football world enables the 'topdog' attitude to happen. But both guys can spot talent and nuture it, with great coaching and training sessions.
Just like other academies SAFC tries to create an all round player at young ages, sometimes it's almost like making a team of robots, wanting them to be able to play in different positions, and have set skills. This can lose talent which doesn't fit this 'brief' creative players and set position players can emerge later even though they were rejected by the acadmey. Again this is the way academies are and not just the fault of our academy 'losing' good talent. Anyways felt I had to speak up for the academy and Ged and Elliot, they have great facilities and great staff. There are wrong things to be sure, don't know if those will change with a different person in charge though.

Good post but as you're probably very well aware, professional sports is a results based business. Some people ply their trade in sports where there's no basic wage, only prize money. No win, no eat.
Others are lucky enough to get a regular wage or a juicy contract. In the end though, given the competitive nature, actual achievements will be put under the magnifying glass.

In my opinion he's had more that a fair crack of the whip. He could've had no real complaints if he was sacked 9 years ago and every year since. The success rate is beyond abysmal. I think his record states he's done a poor job but he wouldn't be the first manager who's been sacked while doing a good job. It's a cruel business at times.

You can list many reasons or excuses for the failure but as someone in charge it's ultimately his job to manage the resources. Whether he needs 200 raw recruits or 20 very high quality candidates is down to him. As a manager you manage and live and die by your results. Honestly, he can't have any real complaints.

Could someone put up a comprehensive list of the nepotist contracts ower the years please?

My nephew used to give last years FM/CM game when he got his new one for his birthday. The number of names on the clubs books that coincided with those of real past and current players/staff seemed a bit strange tbh. I thought at one point that both the FM/CM staff and youth players were "made up names" and put it down to coincidence but it looks like I was wrong. If its struck me as weird then surely ES must have thought so although his first DOF appointment puts him on thin ice ower this matter!

SAFC always had an excuse for not turning em out prior to the academy but now its been running this long their excuse time is rapidly running out. Crewe were churning top class FL/PL players for years on a fraction of our budget and in the shadow of far more big clubs than us. Platt, Lennon, Savage, Rob Jones, Ashton etc etc The SAFC backroom boys have had a good run, they cant complain.

Off the top of my head I can only think of 3. McNamee's son is in the academy at he moment. Bally's son was there for a few years as was Kevin Richardson's son when he was coach here - mind they were both released then resigned when we were managerless between Murray stepping down and Quinn taking over.

Suppose you could count Dan Smith as younger brother of Anthony but he had nothing to do with the club since leaving 15 years earlier.

There's been a few with similar names (Agnew, Smith, Kay) but they weren't related to their namesakes.

Don't think its that bad really, Man United picked David Gill's son on the bench for the first team a few times but he's never played anywhere else since for example, and Fergie used to play his son before that

Sunlansthebest begs to differ.

The Academy set up is very much a job for the boys and girls !! McNamee is Godparent to Elliott Dickmans kids and the are basically best friends and some of the stuff that goes on in that place is scandalous. Anyone who upsets or disagrees with either one either loses their jobs or fears for their job, they really do dominate the whole place.

Elliott Dickman has his brother Lewis working full time as 12-16 coach, his wife is Assistant Academy secretary to McNamee's wife's best friend, and his younger brother Jonjo working with the u10's down. The 2 other full time coaching members of staff in the set up are basically long term friends of Dickman. (Brightwell and Atkinson!!)

McNamee has his son who is woefully poor protected by himself and Dickman, it is a standing joke with other players and staff how bad he is. ( A friend of mines son played in the same team as him for 2 years and the players apparently used to laugh at how technically poor he was, but they all knew he would get a contract)

The place really is that poor and needs a total overhaul.
